A Dog Named Guero in Cancun
On Saturday January 9th, a concerned citizen in Cancun area brought Angie at Rescate Malix a very injured dog. This dog had a broken leg, hip, jaw and nose (among other things) and was very skinny. It is not known if he was attacked severely by many other dogs, or hit by a car or a human. Despite these injuries, the dog had a great spirit and the shelter, Rescate Malix, decided to give Guero a chance, but needed money to give him the operations and vet care that he needed to get better.
Angie has given him loads of TLC and feeds him every 4 hours. Guero is SUCH a sweet boy and not to mention, extremely handsome. Guero had his operation last Wednesday and is recovering well.
Donations are still welcome (to cover the costs of the operation) and Rescate Malix is looking for a quiet home for him to recover in! He is a love with people but apprehensive of other dogs at the moment. They now suspect that he had his injuries for awhile and was suffering on the street, so his defenses are up from having to protect his injured body and being in constant pain. However, since Angie has had him he has made great strides towards knowing other dogs. He is less nervous, more settled and his defenses are dropping. We believe with the correct rehabilitation
toward other animals he will adjust to fit in safely – but this needs to be done slowly with time. We’re happy to say that things are looking up for him… and now he needs a loving home… will it be yours?
Donations can be made at www.rescatemalix.org
and Foster inquiries can be made to Angie at 998-874-2070 angelinessantano [at] yahoo [dot] com
NO DONATION IS EVER TOO SMALL!!
Foster home: They are looking for a temporary foster home in Cancun area for Guero to recover quietly in. If you are in a position to help foster him and give him TLC while he gets his strength back, please contact Angie. GUERO needs to rest quietly without other dogs around. Angie has 25 dogs and it is harder for her to keep things quiet and peaceful. Or maybe someone has a home that they can easily take care of him separately away from their other animals.

And In Progreso…Mr. White Needs a Home
We are fostering a white male poodle that came to us last September, presumably lost from one of the renters at the beach at the end of the last summer season. We cannot find the owners and it is apparent that this guy has been accustomed to riding in a car and walking on and off a leash. He smiles when you talk to him and wiggles his back end. Unfortunately, he is so personable that he goes to
anyone. Because of this, he has been dog-napped twice now from our area. We found him the
first time tied up on a 5 foot chain in someone’s yard with his original collar. Luckily, he was well fed that time. Last week however, we was taken and held for ransom – and was returned to us with a bladder infection and was vomiting. He may have been shut up in a room for a week as he seems to have lost his
bark! We think that he may now be a target and don’t want this guy to be put through any more anguish. We have 2 other dogs that would have to be kept inside if we continue to foster Mr. White so we have no other choice. We are hoping that someone will give him a forever home this week otherwise, we may have to take him to a shelter – and that would be heartbreaking. He loves other dogs, people and is now great with cats too.
If you are interested in adopting Mr. White, please contact Dan or Cindy at danielpowell4 [at] gmail [dot] com or 999-174-6042 (Cell) or 969-934-0970 (Home).
Lastly…
A young Mexican couple that we know recently rescued three puppies that had been hanging around their house. The dog catchers took them away one day, and the wife was beside herself imagining what was going to happen to them in the dog pound (perrera). If you don’t know what they do to dogs in the pound here, you can go here and find out. It’s unpleasant to say the least. The young man, despite having recently lost his tourism-related job due to the economy/swine flu/violence scares that have kept tourists out of Mexico, rescued all three puppies from the pound and brought them home. The dogs started out by being very afraid of humans… who can blame them? But two of the three are becoming much more friendly and open… the third and oldest one may not be salvageable, but is working with a local dog psychologist (yes, they have those in Mexico too, apparently!). They need homes for the puppies, and if possible, they need us to donate some money to reimburse them for the expense of rescuing the dogs. They aren’t asking much… just $700 pesos (about $50 USD). In fact, THEY didn’t even ask, but their friend is asking for them.

If you can see it in your heart to donate a bit for the care of these dogs, we can assure you that a little will go a very long way. And if you are looking for a puppy (or two or three), please email or call Viviana GarcĂa at 999-180-0761 or vivichef [at] hotmail [dot] com. (You might remember Viv…. she helped find a home for Almita, the white cat, a few months ago). To donate RIGHT NOW (ah, come on… just do it!), go to www.paypal.com and send your donation to the dogs using this Paypal ID: “efields [at] eclectech [dot] com”. We promise every penny will get to the right place to help these puppies!
Thank you
Thanks to all the people who are rescuing dogs, taking care of them and finding homes for them. Thanks to all the volunteers and vets from last weeks Spay and Neuter Campaign. And thanks to all of our readers who donate to these groups and especially to those who adopt the dogs and cats they find on the streets of Merida and the Yucatan (and anywhere else, for that matter!).

Love every article you write about dogs, their needs, the people helping, etc We are dog lovers and have two “adopted” dogs, one from Florida and the other one from Dominican Republic. They are part of our family and of course flew with us to start our “retirement” here in Merida. They have adapated quite well.
Your articles help us know where to donate and help. Please keep up the good work!
I love reading this article, I am also a dog/cat lover and everytime I am in the Chelem area a baech 20 minutes from merida City I end up caring for 2 to 3 stray dogs like Guero or Mr White but never can find a nice home for them on the contrary I see more than 10 dogs all looking for food or shelter and fighting among them for territory and survival. Next time I visit the area I like to get help to spay them and even received donations to care for all of them. It is very sad to see how they starved and nobody cares. Thanks for sharing your great work!
[...] The poodle from last week? Well, he’s still looking for a permanent home. He’s a well-mannered white poodle… very good for people with allergies. For more info, read about Mr. White the Poodle here. [...]
