Injured Dog needs you!
This sweet little terrier was found in the streets of Merida by a kind Yucatecan family. She had apparently been hit by a car and has a severe hip displacement and leg fracture. We brought her to Planned Pethood and Dr. Tony along with Dr. Garcia at Hospital Veterinario Peninsular have kindly offered their services at a significantly reduced cost, however the surgery and care will still cost about $2,300 pesos.

She is very young (about 1 year) and is very adoptable, so we would like to go ahead with the surgery. We have currently paid $400 pesos towards her care and have another $300 pesos donated to help with the cost. We are hoping to raise the difference to pay for her surgical costs which will happen Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. We anticipate that the surgery will go well, and we would then like to try to find someone who would be interested in adopting or offering foster care while she recuperates.
UPDATE Jan 10, 2010:
Hello All,
Here is an update to our story about the terrier hit by a car. She had her surgery on Thursday and did very well. Dr. Tony also very graciously did a spay at the same time (at no additional cost, I might add). Katie Brewer will be taking care of her temporarily until we can find her a home. Our little terrier now has a name – Sofia, which is quite fitting given her sweet disposition and elegant demeanor.
And thank you again for all the donations and well-wishes. Sofia says ‘gracias!’
If you are interested in adopting little Sofia, please contact Jill Benson at snjbenson [at] yahoo [dot] com

I would like to offer to pay for any of the outstanding costs for this surgery.
My husband is meeting with a representative of Yucatan Living this Friday and he will bring the amount at that time.
Thank you so very much to Dale Hunter-Aubichon for paying for the costs of the surgery for the injured little puppy. I feel like there’s hope for this old world when I read about things like this. The puppy and animal lovers everywhere are so thankful for your caring kindness and people like you. Thank you & Happy 2010!
You beat me too it! I’m going to Planned Pethood on Thursday with my doggies, will see if there’s anything else that needs doing.
WG’s, you’re doing really awesome work here. Thank you.
I just want to say thank you so much to everyone. Your kind donations and well-wishes have warmed my heart. And a very special thank you to Dale for offering to pay the outstanding costs. Planned Pethood has been very kind to us with his assistance and we very much appreciate all their help!
Wow! We were going to help too! Were late reading our mail, we just moved to Merida a few months back and are getting settled in this beautiful city, have 2 dogs. By the way, where is Planned Pethood????
Keep up the good work, love this blog!!!!!
Planned Pethood is located on Avenida Tecnologico (the same street as Costco). It is past Costco about half a mile on your right, past Calle 9, but before you get to the end of the street (where it swerves to go under the bridge and on to the Gran Plaza shopping mall.
Hello All,
Something has come up and we desperately need someone to foster care this little sweetie for next week. My husband and I will be working all day, everyday for the Esterilizacion 2010 campaign (Jan 11-15) and we will not be home to care for this little one. If anyone can help, I can meet you this weekend to drop her off, and then pick her up again after the 15th. Can you help…?
Here’s more info on Planned Pethood:

Any chance of someone setting up a PayPal page for Planned Pethood for donations?
How is the dog doing? I wish I was there already, things are taking longer then I planned. Hopefully in the next six months. Can’t wait.
Sofia is lovely and living the grand beach life with me in Telchac Puerto! Pictures coming soon, she’s a wonderful little doggie!
Did this dog find a home?I am travelling to Merida tomorrow and would like to know…What would it take to bring her to the USA???
I think Sofia DID find a home (see the comment above yours), but there are plenty of other dogs available to bring home with you. And it’s easy to bring them back to the USA. Contact Jill Benson at the email address in the article and she can find you another (similar) puppy… thank you!
