Albergue Franciscano del Animal Desprotegido A.C.

We are a non-profit association that exists to assist animals. Our slogan, "Unidos Por Los Animales" (United for the Animals) says it all. Our mission is to improve the relationship between ourselves, rational human beings, and animals who are all around us. Activities of AFAD include rescuing abandoned or abused animals, healing and sheltering them, and helping them find new and better famiiles.

During the time that the animals are in our shelter, we give them medical treatment in the best possible conditions that we can afford. They are kept off the street and safe from harm. We guard them against worms, ticks and fleas; we feed them and if necessary and possible, we sterlize them. We have agreements with some local vets to help us by giving us discounts for surgeries. We also promote sterilizations and education as the only real solution to end the problem of overpopulation of domestic animals.

We are located in the 4.5 km S/N Antigua carretera on the way to Cholul, in front of the University Modelo, just east of the Periferico.

Normally the shelter has around 50 dogs and 20 cats, but this quantity is variable. If you are looking to adopt a dog or cat, please come visit and meet our animals. They are friendly and loving and by adopting one, you can give a deserving pet a good home!

Come adopt me!

AFAD's resources come from people like YOU... benefactors that donate food, money, medicines, and more. AFAD also has a small group of volunteers that do everything from playing with and walking the dogs to rescue hurt or abandoned animals.

When somebody wants to adopt an animal, we give them all the information necessary about adopting another living been that will became the new member of the family. We educate them about how to care for a dependent animal.

Some (basic) characteristics that we look for in a future family are:
· Economical resources to buy necessary things for the pet or to takeher/him to the vet.
· Space that is necessary for the new pet, so that he or she is sheltered from the rain and sun.
· Time to be with the pet as an animal is never happy being all alone for lengthy periods of time.
· Agreement among every member of the family to get a new pet.

We also tell people that the pet won’t have the same health all her/his life and that at times, he or she will need extra care.

When somebody adopts a pet, they must fill out a form and give us a copy of an official ID. After the adoption, we schedule an unannounced visit, so we can check to see if the animal is ok. If they aren't, we take them back.

To summarize, AFAD wants to promote consciousness about animals and their need to be protected. We believe strongly in what Gandhi said: “The greatness of a nation can be judged in the way their animals are treated”.
