Happy Endings

Happy Doby Day!Doby adopted in Progreso

We like to report on the happy results of adoptions as much as we can, and we’re happy to report that these are happening more often! Remember the big and beautiful doberman found wandering and starving near the Merida airport? He has found a home with another doberman, and a loving couple, and now spends his days eating, sleeping and walking on the beach. His new family writes:

Yes you can tell everyone that Dobie has a new home!  He is really coming along well, starting to put on some weight and his skin and eyes are looking better.  I think that he is going to be a really good dog!  I attached some pictures so that you can see he and Julio at the beach together.

A big thanks to Doug and Theresa Wiley of Mayan Living who adopted Doby!Chop, the CHihuahua in Merida

If you want to adopt a cat or a dog, please take some time to contact the two Merida animal shelters listed at the bottom of this page. There are many wonderful pets just waiting for a new home!

More Adoptions!

We’re just full of happy stories today, for a change. Here are a few more from AFAD.

OttoWhen Chop first came to AFAD, he had been beaten despite being a little sweet dog. AFAD and their vets operated on him, but unfortunately it was too late and he lost his eye. Judith, his "mama", tells us that at first Chop was very afraid. Every time he saw a broom, he hid in fear. Now, more than a Vitto and momyear after his adoption, he is a loving dog who enjoys the affection of his new family along with his other brothers Otto (found on Paseo de Montejo suffering badly from mange), Vitto (who had been abandoned in an apartment) and Oliveira (who was rescued from a garbage can).

Mali, a crazy mutt, was adopted at an early age, and grew much bigger than was expected. In spite of that, she now lives with her grandmother, a a few other dogs. MaliShe is preparing to go away to live in Canada, where her new family is ready and waiting to meet her. She’ll be living there with Chema, another rescue dog.

Kittens in Cancun

Our friend Kimberley has two kittens ready for Adoption in Cancun. They are de-wormed and are 8 weeks old. Kim writes:

They were born in the Costco parking lot, under the carts.  They are a mix of Siamese as you can see from the attached photos.  Their mama appears to be a Siamese Tabby.  They are healthy, happy and very social; they LOVE people and they LOVE attention!

If you are interested, please contact Kim on her cel or at home:

If You Want to Adopt…

Keep in mind that many people here in Mexico generally want purebred dogs of recognizable breeds, completely passing by the healthy, happy and hearty mixed-breed dogs that abound here (largely as a result of the twin tendencies to let dogs roam the street and to be unwilling to spay or neuter the dogs).

AFAD has these dogs and more at their shelter just off the Periferico on the way to Cholul. They think it is very important that, if you want to adopt a dog or cat, you come and meet with them at the shelter. AFAD is very careful about the families that they allow to adopt dogs, and the conditions that the dogs will be kept in on a daily basis. If you know that you will give a dog a loving home for the rest of its natural life, please visit AFAD to find the dog that it is just right for you!

AFAD is only open Saturdays and Sundays between 11 am and 2 pm. This is when the volunteers are there to assist you with the dogs, and to explain the adoption process. AFAD is located almost opposite the University Modelo on the road to Cholul (orange fence and gate cafe). However, if you are interested in adopting a dog, email AFAD right away at afadmerida [at] gmail [dot] com.

kittens for good homes in Merida Yucatan MexicoPlease Support Yucatan’s Independently-Run Animal Shelters

Here are the two animal shelters in Merida that are mentioned above. If you want a new dog, please look here first. If you have lost a dog, look here first as well. If you have found a dog you cannot keep, please contact them for instructions. If they are able to give the dog a temporary home, they will. We encourage you to be generous with a donation when you bring them a stray dog. If you are visiting Merida and want to take a dog home, please know that this is NOT difficult and they can help!

  1. I recently adopted a cute little girl dog whose name is Bonita. Bonita had been at the sheter for just about a month. I went to the shelter to help bathe and dip dogs one morning when I met her. She was ight as a feather and not doing so wel. I went home and thought about her al night. Needless to say I went back the next morning to get her. I adopted her from EVOLUCION. She has suffered greatly in her 5 years. Lost and scared found in a parking lot in Centro. A terrible eye infection that had left her blind in one eye and she has a cataract in the other. BUT NOW THREE WEEKS LATER A TRANSFORMATION!! Shes gained weight shes so pretty, loving and soo happy. She has made me so happy too. I wanted to just STRESS how hard the director, Silvia Cortez works to keep the 140+ dogs she currently shelters. She knows each and everyones name, their story, she’ll tell you about their personality etc. A lovely ever so peasanr Maya woman who lives with her “PEKES”. Please visit the shelter in San Lorenzo, Donate money or time if you can. I can gladly drive anyone who wishes to visit or volunteer please emal me mrssoniabonilla@yahoo.com.

  2. Sonia B….thanks for your wonderful comments regarding Silvia at Evolucion. She has truly been an inspiration for me as well. I am so glad to hear little Bonita is doing well. I’m usually at the sanctuary on Sundays to help bath and dip the dogs as well. Hope to see you there sometime. Have a wonderful day!!
