Dental Studio Merida is a family business of four dentists. Dr. Teresita Hernandez with a specialty in prosthodontics, her brother an orthodontist, her husband an endodontist and her sister-in-law, a pediatric dentist. Dr. Teresita has trained specifically for all types of dental restorations, getting her 3-year certificate of specialty in Prosthodontics at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. In 2010, she also completed a Fellowship in Implantology at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma in Mexico City. Her three fellow dentists have done post-graduate work in the best universities in Mexico with professors trained in the United States. In addition, one of them also studied in the United Kingdom. All four dentists speak English and Spanish fluently.

Dr. Teresita Hernandez

As the lead dentist at Dental Studio Merida, Dr. Teresita Hernandez is the only woman dentist in the Yucatan Peninsula with a US certificate in prosthodontics. After being born and raised in Merida by two parents who are also dentists and former teachers at UADY, she graduated with honors from dental school in 2004 and won several national scholarships. She also won a scholarship from Procter & Gamble Phillips Oral Health to participate in the Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is currently the president of the Scientific Committee of the Yucatecan Dental Association and is a part of a select group of dentists, Professors of the Mexican Dental Association, which lectures nationally.

Dr. Hernandez is a member of the US Academy of Osseointegration, the International Team of Implantology (a global organization) and a member of the Mexican and Yucatan Dental Associations.

Tropical Wood

Locally grown, tropical hardwoods are the best products to use in the climate of the Yucatan. Treated correctly, they provide a sustainably-grown product that is naturally conditioned to withstand the rigors of the tropical rain, sunshine, heat and humidity. One of the woods used by Tejaban-ES is called cumarú. Cumarú is an extremely heavy hardwood that has minimum contraction properties with changes of humidity and temperature. The wood is naturally resistant to biological predators and therefore does not require chemical treatment. The color of cumarú can range from beige to brown with abrupt contrasts of color occasionally. When the wood is dried, the color changes to a rosy beige and a reddish brown. This extreme hardness of this wood makes it a perfect material for floors, decks, bridges, bannisters, stairs and even cutting boards or counters.

Another wood that Tejaban-ES works with is called teca in Spanish, but we would know it as teak wood. Teak is now planted and harvested in many places around the world, including nearby Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Honduras and in many other places in Latin America. The teak tree can grow up to 50 meters tall, with large and deep roots. It has a straight trunk and large limbs, making it a good tree for lumber. Teak is also naturally resistant to weather and bugs in the tropics and has been used for centuries in tropical environments for houses, furniture and even cabinetry in boats and airplanes.

Architectural Wood Features

Tejabanes – What is a tejaban? A tile-covered, wooden roof structure is called a tejaban. Old and new homes alike in the Yucatan have large outdoor living areas, covered with a tejaban roof. A tejaban roof is both sturdy and economical to build, and its old-world appearance lends an artisan feel to any facade.

Palapas – A palapa is a roof structure made of rustic or refined wood, covered with zacate or palm leaves that are woven to provide a rainproof covering. Palapas are typically also chemically treated for insects and other biological enemies.

Pergolas – A roof structure made of refined or rustic wood that serves to provide shade or shelter in an outdoor area. Typically a pergola is made of wood and combined with sun-resistant fabric, policarbonate or a combination of both.
