Leones Baseball July 24 Update

Things are heating up at Kukulcan Stadium in Merida!

We’re down to eight games left in the season. The Leones are still in first place for the second half of the season and fighting with the Olmecas de Tabasco for a spot in the playoffs. We had a bad first half so the playoffs are not yet a sure bet for “our boys”.

One of the exciting things for me has been the number of expatriates that have been coming to sit with us in Butaca Alta. We sound sooooooo good when we sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the seventh inning stretch! The other fans just love it and give us quite a round of applause when we finish, so if you’re looking for five minutes of fame we can provide it at Kukulcan.

The Leones have a new player who joined the team a month ago. He’s a New Yorker named Quincy Foster. He’s the long, lean, jumpy type who leads off the batting line-up and usually gets on first and then makes the opposing pitchers so nervous that they throw a few balls. He plays off the base, he jumps around; if there is a small break and the music comes on, he even dances. Needless to say everyone is in love with Quincy. He steals second a lot and the ball often flies through second into the outfield. Up from the slide comes Quincy and off to third he goes. The other night as he was going out to his position in left field, he even joined the scantily-clad cheerleaders who had lined up to do their dance routine.

Quincy FosterWhat has happened as a result of Quincy’s antics is that the other guys on the team have loosened up. Said Gutierrez, one of the catchers, who is always a bit of a clown, is even more of one. Izzy Alcantara, our giant first baseman from the Dominican Republic (another recent acquisition) has started strutting his stuff too, putting on some dance moves when the team takes the infield. I don’t know if Quincy should get all the credit but the team has been winning more since he arrived, too. The team seems more relaxed and they’re hitting the ball, coming from behind to win in the ninth or diving into the stands to make that last out and save a win.

There are only three home games left in the regular season. Here are the dates and the times so you will have no excuse to miss a wonderful time.

  • Friday, July 27th at 8:00pm
  • Saturday, July 28, at 6:00pm (bring a cap if you’re going to sit with us because it will be sunny!)
  • Sunday, July 29th, at 6:00pm (same rules apply)

There are tickets, don’t worry! We will be playing Tabasco, the very team that can knock us out of the playoffs. This is better than TV, I can promise you!

See you there!

Just as an extra note: Someone mentioned after reading the food chapter of my book that the food sounded too rich for his/her taste. For those of you who like healthy food, you should know they also sell unadulterated peanuts and fresh mangos, carrot sticks, and jicama slices. It’s only 20 pesos for a nice size serving of fresh fruit.
