We’re back in Merida with a lot to write about… and no time to do it! Montones de email is the price you pay for taking a few days off.
We stayed at a lovely little collection of casitas, called Hemingways. The owner is Paola… she speaks Italian and Spanish and not much English. She manages the eleven casitas with a casual aplomb.
You can read more about Hemingway’s here on the Mexonline website.
The casitas are clean and spacious. There are three of them right on the beach, and the rest at varying distances behind those. Paola lost her restaurant, also on the beach, in the hurricane, but is rebuilding it as we speak.
As you can see from the photo, the beach is big, white and mostly empty… just the way we like them!
If you stay there, be sure to say we sent you. And be sure to have Paola cook lunch for you at least once… her tagliatelle with fresh prawns in a white wine sauce was the perfect meal for us one afternoon, with a bottle of chilled white wine and a view of the ocean from our own front porch. Heaven!
We drove back along the coast yesterday and visited a number of communities: Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. We will report shortly on their recovery efforts after Wilma, complete with photos.

I am booking a vacation in Tulum and one of the only places available is the Hemingway. I can’t seem to find any information on this property. Could you perhaps let me know how it compares to some of the other properties? The other one that has some availability – casa sueno – is considerably more expensive. My email is jfscheier@yahoo.com.
hey guys,
sounds like a cool place. my girlfriend and i are going next week, we’re wondering how much you paid?
let me know if you see this. pejkmalinovski at gmail dot com
thanks,

For all of you reading the blog, Hemingway’s costs somewhere between US$100 and US$150 a night. Paradise is not cheap (but think what you get (or don’t get) in the States for that price! And they don’t have a website, so you have to just email Paola.
[...] Our friends at Sin Duda Villas in Xcalak survived without major damage, as did many others. But Hemingway’s in Tulum was hard hit, as were most of the homes and businesses in Mahajual and many also in Chetumal. If [...]
