One of the most wonderful things about Mexico is the number of people who have the talent to actually make their own music (and no, I don't mean editing mix tapes). Actual musicians making actual live music can be found just ... everywhere.

As a child, my grandmother and a couple aunts played the piano. That was a great treat: not a radio or record albums (dating myself?) , but real live music.

Unfortunately, that isn't the case so much in the USA these days. Everyone has music, but it's someone elses music recorded on tiny chips. Fewer and fewer know how to make music. The testing regime in US schools is pushing out arts and music.

In Mexico, bands, maricharis, small groups..... music is much more abundant in the live form. And that's another thing to love about the country.

Deborah,
You can probably buy almost anything in Cancun these days. If you can't find a guitar in the zona hotelera (the tourist zone), just hop in a cab and tell him quiero comprar una guitarra (I want to buy a guitar). He can probably take you somewhere in downtown Cancun that sells them. There are a lot of musicians throughout the Yucatan and therefore, a lot of stores to supply them.
