I'm from Mexico City but currently live in the US. This website has been of great help to me with certain things as I've been planning on moving from the US back to Mexico to Merida. As far as Mexico City or el DF goes it's really beautiful city! There are so many things to do in and around the city that you won't have time to see it all. The people are very nice the might just be a little bit more defensive (just like if you went to NYC or LA in the US) so it might take a bit longer for them to warm up but overall people are very nice. The city can be a bit dangerous if you make yourself stand out too much but if you're just a bit street smart you'll be fine. To me DF is very similar to NYC as far as how the city is laid out and how you need to tackle it so if you've ever been to New York you should be fine in Mexico City! :)

Great article.

And to the commenter Roddrigo Sidney: You do not need to disparage Mexico City in order to express your delight and satisfaction with Merida. As someone who lived in Mexico City for five years, I can tell you that it is the most fascinating and beautiful cities in the Western Hemisphere, warts and all. You say yourself you haven't ever left the Mexico City airport; why then are you under the delusion that your opinion is helpful? The smog is really not that bad (and has gotten better over the last decade) and the same street smarts a traveler should possess in any city holds true for el D.F.

To let over-hyped and out-of-date hysterical notions of the evils of Mexico City dissuade even one traveler from experiencing this amazing city would really be a shame.

Mexico City visitors should make it a priority to visit Hostería Santo Domingo, Belisario Domínguez 72, the city´s oldest restuarant. Dating from 1860, it offers a true Mexican venue and wide variety of Mexican cuisine, at reasonable prices, great ambience, and a professional staff closely supervised by the family that has owned it since the 1970's.
