Well, just to be sure, we asked around. But Yucatan isn't much for public festivals this time of year. New Year's Eve is usually celebrated with the family or with friends. Our intrepid assistant, Beatriz, wrote this:
"No such thing as a public fiesta. But in this part of town, south of the zocalo, you might find some streets closed and neighbors on the street having a party. Although that is also kind of private since it is only the neighbors along the street who get together. The burning of the viejos will also happen more in the south... basically in the old colonies... I don't think it happens in the new fraccionamientos..."

This article will give you a rundown on New Year's Eve traditions in these parts:
http://www.yucatanliving.com/events/new-years-eve-in-yucatan.htm

And a listing of what's going on where this year will be published very soon!

Thanks for any ideas.

Will Merida be hosting a different country this coming year 2009, as they did host Cuba at the beginning of this 2008? If so, which Country and starting when. The rumour was we were hosting Argentina????

I first came to Merida in 2004 to study Spanish, and have returned every year since to visit my "family." I came across your newsletter last February and have enjoyed reading about Merida from a Gringo/a perspective. I am visiting again this month and looking forward to attending some of the activities listed in the calendar. I appreciate your efforts in maintaining this spectacular little newsletter, it has kept me close to a city that I consider to be my second home. Millones de gracias, Kathryn
