This Week… starting January 18
Municipal Fiestas This Week
Temax Fiesta 7 Day Event (Last Week of January)
This fiesta is in honor of la Virgen de la Purísima Concepción. This year, it begins on Saturday, January 23th. There will be 6 more municipal fiestas beginning next week, so get to this one early! Temax is located a couple of small municipalities inland from the beach, at about the center of our coastline. They are close enough to the beach that turtles are listed as part of the wildlife found there. Of the 3,231 folks who live in Temax, 2,392 are Mayans and Mayan is the principal language spoken there. Temax has some of the most exciting recent (20th century) history in all of Yucatan. Read about it HERE.

Jan. 29: Women’s Dance in Progreso
If you have never been to a Women’s Dance, this is an experience you can’t afford to miss! This dance is a pre-Carnival event hosted by the Ladies’ Volunteer Trust for the San Joaquin Nursing Home. (except that some of these dance lines have 2 and 3 generations in them). The main thing here is to have a wonderful time – no men allowed – and all proceeds go to help support the nursing home. If you cannot attend this Women’s Dance – there will be several in Merida. We will try to find them and let you know when and where.

Would it be possible for you to obtain and publish a list of church services at the Cathedral for major feast days like Christmas and Easter? For special dates, Christmas (Dec 24) and New Year’s Eve (Dec 31), there is a 10 pm and a 12 pm mass. Semana Santa 2010 is from March 27 to April 4, and Easter week is from April 4th to the 11th. They usually have festivities starting Sunday 28 (Palm Sunday) and then the major days are Holy Thursday and Holy Friday and then Sunday again (Resurrection Sunday). We are not sure about the times for the special masses, but we’ll look into it.
