This Week… starting August 29, 2011
There are some choice events this week, but not the usual onslaught of activities. That’s because people are either wrapping up their summers at the beach or heading back to school this week. In the next few weeks, we expect all sorts of new events to be added to our calendar… so take advantage of this week to perhaps visit one of the fiestas outside of Merida. A trip to the Yucatan countryside is never disappointing!
Municipal Fiestas This Week
Hunucma Fiesta at Sisal: August 31 – Sept. 6
This fiesta is in honor of Cristo de Hunucma. The main artisan activities of the municipality are the preparation of typical clothes, the manufacture of henequén fiber shoes and coconut carving.
The artisans here also excel in the making of jewelry and in leatherwork. Hunucma is close by, a charming town and this should be an easy end-of-summer day trip.
Cuzamá Fiesta: Sept. 1 – Sept. 8
This fiesta is in honor of the birth of the Virgin Mary. Here, you will find hammocks made of hemp and cotton, as well as embroidery by both hand and machine. Cuzamá is located just south of Acanceh and Seye, between Tecoh and Homun. This too would make a nice day trip.
Sucilá Fiesta: Sept. 2 – Sept. 10
This fiesta is in honor of the birth of the Virgin Mary. The main artisan activities of the municipality include the construction of furniture with bojom wood, the making of hemp hammocks, and the making of machine embroidered huipiles. Sucilá is located between Buctzotz and Tizimin.
Sotuta Fiesta: Sept. 4 – Sept. 8
This fiesta is in honor of the birth of the Virgin. In the municipal head (county seat) there are some wonderful things to see in Sotuta. There is la Casa del Señor de Sotuta, which is the old palace of Nachi Cocoom; there is a temple dedicated to San Pedro the Apostle, constructed in the 16th century; and an 18th century chapel in the hermitage that is dedicated to Santa Cruz. See Bicycle Yucatan’s wonderful article on their bike and bus trip to Sotuta Here.

There will be 12 contestants each night. This is the 4th year of this contest. It all culminates in a huge event during the State Fair at X’matquil in November. This contest began after there was a contest to replace Timbiriche members as they aged out of the famous young group. When the contests were over, 600 young people in Yucatan had been identified as having voices that would be of commercial value. Yucatan immediately took advantage of this newly discovered natural resource and we now enjoy some of the best young voices, in both choirs and commercial groups, in the world.

I’ll be in Merida next weekend and I wanted to take my dad to the orchestra, unfortunately, tusboletos.mx only accepts Mexican-issued credit cards… and mine’s from Canada. Very disappointing !
Miguel,
You may still be able to get tickets at the box office. I would at least try – first thing when you arrive!
