Events: Festivals & Art Classes

This week…

Cycling Returns to Yucatan: 4 Days This Week
There will be a cycling marathon from the 26th through the 29th of June. The trips, categories, entrance fees, and prizes are all listed here. If you don’t ride, come on out anyway and cheer the riders on. There are events for the little ones, and even for the elderly.
Dates: June 26, 27, 28, 29
Location: See website
Time: These rides begin very early in the morning.
Admission: Admission fees depend upon your category. See website for details.

Xocchel Fiesta: 6 Day Event
This is the annual Xocchel Fiesta that honors San Juan Bautista, patron saint of the Municipality of Xocchel. If you are looking for a municipality that is off the beaten path – but the beaten path is still nearby - Xocchel should be your destination of choice. This small municipality lies less than an hour southeast of the City of Merida, on the road to Valladolid, and the 21st century has not quite made it there. To see a great map, plus pictures of the area and towns in Xocchel, click on Bicycle Yucatan, our favorite traveling-the-back-roads-of-Yucatan website.
Location: Town of Xocchel
Dates and Times: Begins at Noon on Tuesday, June 24 and runs through Saturday, June 29
Admission: Free

Panaba Fiesta: 5 Day Event Panaba Fiesta
This is the annual Panaba Fiesta that honors San Pedro and San Pablo. There are several ways to get to Panaba, which lies inland from the eastern coast of Yucatan. Try playing with this map to see which way would be closest for you. These rural fiestas are wonderful opportunities to see some of the best of Yucatan’s culture as it was. The 21st century is gaining on these rural areas fast and we certainly do not begrudge the people an easier lifestyle. However, we are at an age now – many of us – where nostalgia is looking pretty good to us. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy this wonderful rural festival.
Location: Town of Panaba
Dates: Thursday, June 26 through Monday, June 30.
Admission: Free

Samahil Fiesta: 9 Day Event
The Samahil Fiesta begins on Sunday, June 29. This Fiesta will continue for 9 days, in honor of San Pedro Abad, patrono del pueblo. Samahil is only about 18 miles from the City of Merida, past Uman and on the way to Celestun. It can easily be found by zooming in on this map. If you haven’t been to Yucatan for a while, you might think that little Samahil is still "way out in the country." However, like so many of our other nearby towns and villages, Samahil has come a long way in a very short time. This is a busy area, with plenty of talented craftsmen and women, so this fiesta should be a winner.
Location: Town of Samahil
Dates: Sunday, June 29 through June 7
Admission: Free

The popular play date for dogs is getting very popular! Last week, we had ELEVEN dogs all getting to know each other (we call that ‘socializing’ and it’s very important for dogs… ) Come and join Zoe, Pepper, URL, Mali, Ms. Kitty, Champ, Popcorn, China, Manny, Buddy, and more… and of course, bring your four-legged and most loyal friend. We know it’s hard to get up early on Sunday, but once you see those puppies playing, you’ll decide it’s all worth it. Its hot outside, and we have some shade, but don’t forget to bring water for you and for your dog.

If you want to play chess, go to the sidewalk outside the Museum of Anthropology on Paseo de Montejo at 9 am and pick up a game! There is a complete listing of activities, including sports, music, and craft events on the Bici-Ruta website.

Sunday downtown is a spectacular tradition in Mérida. Start at the center of town, where booths are set up all around the Plaza Grande. Inside the plaza, you can find huipiles, guayaberas, honey, dolls, bags, tee-shirts… and everything is made for sale by the local people of the Yucatan. The outer ring of booths are selling food: marquesitas, tacos, cochinita, ice cream (try the coconut), fruit, drinks, etc. If the crowd starts to get to you, wander up Calle 60 to Santa Lucia Park (at Calle 55), where you can also find antiques, old books and other curiosities. At that lovely park, there is also live music, lots of dancing, and great food.
