Yucatan Living Happy Birthday Merida!
You’re 467 years young and looking better than ever! Over 200 events that will take place in the Municipio de Merida de Yucatan between January 3 and January 23. Just keep reading our “This Week in the City” to find something for everyone!

Yucatan Living A New Map of Yucatan’s Municipalities
Before we tell you about this week’s outlying municipal fiestas, HERE  is a great new map. All 106 municipalities are shown in color, with numbers and a legend. Bookmark that map so you can get an idea of where the municipalities are. This is especially important for those of you who think you might like to live in the country someday. You can find the population of each municipality HERE.

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Tizimin A Long-Running EventTizimin 2009 Fiesta
Dec. 29 through Jan. 6 (and beyond…. )
We hardly know where to start telling you about this fiesta! It seems that it is never going to end! We are seeing events scheduled through January 18th ! This fiesta is in honor of Santos Reyes (the Three Kings). Don’t think of this as just the end of a Cowboy Christmas. Tizimin is a huge municipality (county) that extends from whale watching on the northern coast to the traditional Mayan lifestyle in the south. While this is a cattleman’s wonderland, the shopping here is across the board: fine jewelry, pottery, leather work, pirograbado(wood carving by burning), artistic carpentry, and much much more! Visit Tizimin Hoy to see a full listing of events at this fiesta, as well as a few great videos of events they’ve held thus far.

Yucatan Living Chikindzonot Fiesta 2 Day Event
Jan. 6th and 7th
This fiesta is in honor of Reyes Magos. Chikindzonot is located just about in the center of our southern border and shares its boundary with the State of Quintana Roo. If you are into cenotes and/or the architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries, this is the place for you. Chikindzonot also has more than its share of archaeological monuments at: Xalau, Tamba, Bolmay, Petul, Sotpol, Xuyap, Poxil, Xcoom, Palaban, Xmaos and Xcan. Municipalities like this are the, as yet, unspoiled treasures of our state and we are remiss if we do not visit and support them in any way we can.

Yucatan Living Santa Elena Fiesta 5 Day Event
Jan. 10th through Jan. 24th
This fiesta is in honor of Santo Cristo del Amor. Many of our readers are familiar with the Municipality of Santa Elena because Uxmal is there. Santa Elena is to the southeast of the city, and forms part of our border with the State of Campeche. There are loads of archaeological sites here, including: Uxmal, Kabah, Nohpat, Xcoh and Muchich.

  1. Thanks so much for the municipalities map! We now have one in the casa and one in the car. It’s an extra boost in our explorations of our new “state of mine,” the Yucatan! How grateful we are again in this New Year to be permitted to live here!

    Happy Birthday, Merida!

  2. Thanks for the municipal map.Good job.
It is any map you can publish about the barrios of Merida? We always look for houses or apartments in Merida, and the names of barrios the reals estate mentioned are hard to find. We excluded houses of Chuburna wrongly beleving Chuburna was on the coast, but them we found that name, many times, inside Merida. Thanks

  3. These maps: http://www.mapa-mexico.com.mx/merida.htm are the best I have seen of Merida. You can open them as pdf files and zoom right down to the names of the different areas of the city. The big map doesn’t give you all of the street names and numbers, but enough so that you can find your way. The smaller ones do have street numbers. If anyone knows of a better map, please let us know.

  4. MapQuest ( http://www.mapquest.com ) now has street maps of Merida!

Google Maps ( maps.google.com ) still doesn’t have street names, but they’ve got nice satellite images.

For MapQuest: Just click on the link for “Maps Outside the US and Canada,” choose “International Maps,” set the country to “Mexico,” and “Merida” for the city. You can zoom right in to see every street name. At a medium zoom, you can even see the names of most colonias y fraccionamientos. No actual addresses, though, but still pretty darned good.
