Merida Events: International Festival of Choirs

This Week… starting October 22, 2012

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan’s XII International Choir Festival will be in full swing this week all around the state. With choirs from Yucatan, Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia, there will be no shortage of gala concerts and sweet sounds in the entire state.

Municipal Festivals and Fiestas Beginning This Week

There are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning this week anywhere in the State of Yucatan. However, that doesn’t mean that there is nothing going on in the 106 municipalities! There are still some events that are continuing from last week, and these are accompanied by non-stop getting ready for Día de los Muertos.

Festivals and Fiestas! Valladolid Yucatan Fiestas

Yucatan Living Valladolid Fiesta: October 15 through October 29
This fiesta is in honor of Cristo Rey (Christ the King). Look for leather goods, jewelry, clothing, and hammocks. This is also the land of the caballero, so horsemanship events and cattle shows will likely be on the agenda as well. For more, see Working Gringos’ article on Valladolid: Sultaness of the East. We might also note that, since that article, Valladolid has earned the great honor of being names one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magico, and even has its own bici-ruta (streets closed for bicycle riding on Sundays) and Valladolid Sundays (the equivalent of Merida en Domingo).

Yucatan Living Izamal Fiesta: October 19 through October 31
This fiesta in honor of honor of Santo Cristo de Citilpech. Processions are related to trade associations, and especially to dairy workers. This city has been important to the Mayans continuously from the 4th century B.C. until today. This is the place where one can find a shrine to its founder, Itzamná, as well as a statue of Pope John Paul II.

3 Responses to “Merida Events: International Festival of Choirs”

  1. Will there be Sunday bullfights at the Yucatan State Fair this year ?

    Thank you..

  2. Glad to know Merida hasn’t change in offering a lot of quality artistic venues. Lived there for 10 years from 1993 to 2003, and got to see Isidore (not a pretty site, I had some minor damage in the house, but it was only outside but the week and a half without electricity or running water, that was plain miserable, but some tell me Gilbert in 88′ was worse).
Wish I was there, presently stuck working and doing an M.A. in Brownsville, TX and pretty bored. I keep thinking about La Reina de Montejo, the Peon Contreras, Merida en Domingo (Are they still doing it?) and all the bougainvilleas hanging from garden walls and all those gorgeous trees, especially the flamboyanes and lluvias de oro.
Chuburna and Telchac Puerto are also on my mind, plus the visit I did to El Cuyo and Tizimin in 1998, plus many, many to Valladolid and three unforgettable trips to Campeche to see the old colonial fort city’s downtown.

  3. Roverworld, we were there for Isidore, and you are right! The days without electricity afterwards were the worst part! All the places and things you miss are still here, and more! We hope you get to visit again soon!
