Events: Spring Cultural Festival

This Week… starting March 21, 2011

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan LivingCantamayec Fiesta: March 25 through March 28
This is a traditional "county fair." It is located in the central part of the state, just south of Sotuta and west of Teabo. Look for geat hammocks here! Also look for the 17th century Temple of San Luis and the 18th century Temple of San Miguel Arcangel. The Ohican Archaelogical Zone is located here as well. There are a total of 11 cenotes in Cantamayec. Cholul and Hunchi Ich are suitable for diving. Kochola is suitable for swimming, observing and diving. All three have have beautiful blue water. We suspect that one could live in the State of Yucatan for a lifetime and never get to the end of this very long list of hidden treasures. This is the land of Mayan myths and legends and well worth visiting.

Yucatan Living Casting Resumes for Monique’s Internovela
Want to be an actor in Monique’s Internovela project? She assures us it will be fun and wacky, romantic and poignant, magical and mysterious. She will start filming this winter. For now, she is videotaping casting shots. She asks three questions: Your name, your telephone number and a thing about yourself that you are promoting. While she will be using these clips to call on you for acting parts in the soap, these casting shots can serve a useful community service. She will project your images on the wall of the bakery so all you like-minded people can all get to know each other and connect with each other. The soap opera will be trilingual (English, Spanish and Mayan) so please don’t let your language skills limit your participation. And, of course, there is no need for acting experience. They provide on the job training for free! Monique would also like to thank movie maker Billy Arellano for agreeing to film and direct this project.

Yucatan Living Alejandro Pinzon Conducts the Chamber Orchestra of the City
Mark your calendars for the following dates. Alejandro Pinzon, a native of Merida, is currently leading the Coro Latino-Americano Pittsburgh and has a very busy Spring ahead of him. On May 14, he will lead El Coro (short for Coro Latino-Americano Pittsburgh) in a performance in Pittsburgh – then hop a plane to Merida and practice, practice, practice for three performances during the last week in May. Following those performances, he will have a few days to indulge in a bit of the local tango scene before he flies back to Pittsburgh for another performance by El Coro in Pittsburgh on June 12. His three performances in Merida include:
May 22 -Comisaria Cholul
May 26 -Olimpo Theatre
May 29 –Iglesia San Sebastian

We will add further details as we get them.
Note: We are pressing for Michele and all of the Latino-Americano Pittsburgh members to come and spend a week in Merida. With luck, they will and we will be able to forge a cultural exchange and build a long-lasting friendship between El Coro and some of the choirs we have in Merida. So – El Coro… come on down!

  1. We are very happy to have an event calendar every week.Great job.We follow it ,and assist to the events .We’r sorry this week to receive it just today,Thursday.
We’r sure you’ll fix this for next week.Thanks.Again, great job.

  2. Actually, it was Tuesday. And yes, we usually publish it on Monday, but that week, Monday was a holiday… and we decided to take it!

  3. Do you know of the address of a music shop in Merida that sells clarinets? I need to buy some more. I work on Cozumel and there are not any there. I will need them before August. Also, is there anyone who will be willing to let me have copies of orchestral arrangements that I can use? I have lots of classical guitar music but no orchestral music. Thank you.

  4. Pat, we know of a good music store… the Yamaha music store. Do you know where the park is in Itzamna? It is near there. They have lots of different instruments and sheet music. We can’t guarantee they have clarinets, but that’s where we would start looking! The address is Calle 21 No. 102 A por 20 y 22 in Colonia Itzimna. Phone number is (999) 927 3578 and the website is http://www.musiccenter.com.mx/. Good luck!
