Events: State Fair at Xmatkuil and more!

Coming This Friday: The State Fair!

We have already reported on the fact that the State Fairgrounds in Xmatkuil has gotten a full facelift, complete with much of its electric wiring put underground, all new white paint, the works! But there’s more! This year, ScotiaBank will have ATM machines and, from the description, Banorte will have some kind of prepaid $375 peso account that can be accessed with a credit card.

And we’ll bet you’ve never seen prices go down at a State Fair! Well – they’re going down this year in Yucatan. Tickets to mechanical games that were $25 to $40 pesos last year, will be $10, $25, and $30 pesos this year. There will be a $10 peso entrance fee and the dolphin show will be $25 pesos per person. Unfortunately, the parking situation has not improved, and traffic on the only road into the Fairgrounds is still going to be congested. We sympathize with the folks who live along that road. An entire month of noise and not being able to get into or out of their own property can’t be fun. We do want to ask that our readers be as respectful of the neighbors along the way as possible and, like at the beach, please make sure that all trash is picked up and disposed of properly. We know that, by working together, everyone will have a wonderful time at the 2007 State Fair in Yucatan!

Location: Yucatan State Fairgrounds in Xmatkuil
Dates: November 9 through December 2
Admission: $10 pesos per person

Reata (Lariat) Competition

There’s nothing like the Fall of the year… rodeos, state fairs, kids competing in every skill imaginable – including riding their horses “really fast” and roping anything in sight. In some states, only charros who belong to a union can compete in these events. But, in Yucatan, we get to see the roping talents of all of the vaqueros (cattle tenders) in the state, many of them still in their teens. Look for them practicing in your town or village. They’ll be there all year, in a vacant lot or maybe on the corner of Church property, almost always practicing in the cool air after sundown. They absolutely define the concept of free and happy, and certainly bring home the value of joy in life to the rest of us.

So far, ten young people have qualified to participate in the elimination rounds for Torneo de Lazo 2007, which began this past weekend in Hunucmá and Umán. The remainder of the elimination trials will take place throughout the state (see dates and locations below). Remember, all this time, the State Fair will be underway. When the reata competition is over at Tizimín, the winners will go to the final competition during the last days of the State Fair at Xmatkuil. During the year, please make an effort to go and watch these young people practice their roping skills in your own towns and villages. They seldom have an audience and they love to perform. You’ll always get a great show, even if its only by the light of the moon or a dim street light, in an empty lot, in a village somewhere in Yucatan.

  • Nov. 10 & 11: Tekax,
