Additional Municipal Fiestas include:

Yucatan Living Santa Elena Fiesta: May 17
This fiesta is in honor of Santos Reyes de San Mateo. Look in Santa Elena for Uxmal, kabah, Nohpat, Xcoh, and Muchich, some of the best archaeological sites in all of Yucatan.

Yucatan Living Tixkokob Fiesta: May 17 to 22
This fiesta is in honor of San Bernardino. Look here for leatherwork and hammocks. Tixkokob is just to the east of Merida and south of Conkal. This is a great area of Yucatan and this is a wonderful time of year to go visiting.

Yucatan Living Tekom Fiesta: May 20 to 28
This event is called “Fiesta de las Hamacas.” Tekom is located way over in the southeastern part of our state, just south of Valladolid and north of Chikindzonot. If anyone is looking for “authentic,” this is the place to find it. Artisans in Tekom produce articles carved from wood, typical clothing, embroidered tablecloths, and traditional woven hammocks (hence the name of the fiesta). Since Tekom is off the beaten path, we suspect this is just the sort of place our readers will love.

On May 14, he will lead El Coro (short for Coro Latino-Americano Pittsburgh) in a performance in Pittsburgh – then hop a plane to Merida and practice, practice, practice for three performances during the last week in May. Following those performances, he will have a few days to indulge in a bit of the local tango scene before he flies back to Pittsburgh for another performance by El Coro in Pittsburgh on June 12. His three performances in Merida include:

  1. Where are the weeking events beginning May 23rd? Did someone forget? LOL

  2. Hi Rich, we are working on them! We gather the information all week and publish the events on Mondays. It takes a lot of time and people to gather this information into one place and put it into English! The events for the coming week are usually published in the afternoon on Monday. If you want to get an email notifying you when anything is published on the Yucatan Living website, just click on that “Subscribe” button on the left hand side of the screen and follow directions. You’ll get an email with links to any new articles! Thanks for reading Yucatan Living!

  3. I’d love to see a feature article on the cleaning up of La Plancha (even explaining what it is for those who don’t know), the concert preparations (and controversy? nah…), and the future plans for La Plancha after the concert is over. The last part is what’s currently a mystery to me, but the rest may be useful or interesting for many others.

  4. We’ll see what we can find out…

  5. For those who don’t know, La Plancha is an area around an old train station (Calle 46 x 43-ish). Its pretty much a wasteland but, supposedly, after the concert, it will remain as a park and community resource / cultural center for the people who live in the area. As late as 3 days ago, the neighbors were complaining that no one has shown up yet to clean it up… At any rate – the concert is on July 16, so there is still enough time to get it done … I do know that the people are looking forward to having the work done in their area of town.
