Happy Birthday Mérida!

Festival of the City: 466th Anniversary of the Founding of MeridaFestival of the City of Merida Yucatan

The Festival of the City is under the direction of the City Council, with the support of the Institute of Culture of Yucatan, the Culture Patronage, and a number of private companies. Between Saturday, January 5 and Monday, January 21, 2008, a total of 1,000 artists will participate in 170 events. Admission to all events associated with the Festival of the City will be free except the Gala de Ballet on the 17 th , 18 th , and 20 th of January.

Yucatan Living will list events according to our weekly calendar format. However, if you would like to look ahead and do your own planning, the website for the Festival of the City can be found here. This is a great site because the events can be found in calendar form (under Programs) or by type (using the icons across the top of the page).

Cuban Artistic and Cultural Fair

Crafts, Gastronomy, CDs, books, a photography exhibit, dance workshops, music, Cuban cinema. Events are coordinated by the Cuban Consulate in Merida.

Yucatan Living Cuban Cinema: El Brigadista

The Castro revolution was just consolidating its power when, in 1961, over 100,000 students were sent from their schools into the countryside to teach the peasants there how to read. Coinciding with the Bay of Pigs invasion, in this docudrama, 15-year-old Mario (Salvador Wood) has come to a tiny village in the Zapata swamps and gradually wins the villagers over to his task. At the same time, he receives an education in the realities of rural life from the hard-working peasants.

Smiles of a Summer Night First Feature: The Face (Sweden,1952) When ‘Vogler’s Magnetic Health Theater’ comes to town, there’s bound to be a spectacle. Reading reports of a variety of supernatural disturbances at Vogler’s prior performances abroad, the leading townspeople (including the police chief and medical examiner) request that their troupe provide them a sample of their act, before allowing them public audiences. The scientific-minded disbelievers try to expose them as charlatans, but Vogler and his crew prove too clever for them.

First Feature: The Seventh Seal ( Sweden , 1957). The Black Death is wiping out the population of Europe as Antonius Block, a knight, returns disillusioned from the Crusades. Death appears before him, but he asks for a chance to live and proposes a game of chess. One of Bergman’s most famous films.

Second Feature: Wild Strawberries ( Sweden , 1957). One of Bergman’s warmest, and therefore finest films. It concerns an elderly academic—grouchy, introverted, dried up emotionally—who makes a journey to collect a university award, and en route relives his past by means of dreams, imagination, and encounters with others.

You may remember Joanna from her stellar interview elsewhere on our website. Tonite, Joanna is presenting her new book whose title refers to what happens when a stranger decides to stay here. You might recall that Joanna visited the Yucatan over 30 years ago, fell in love, and has lived here ever since. She has the enviable position of being able to see both the Canadian and Yucatecan cultures from the inside. In her book, she shares her story, as well as tips for living in the Yucatan. We know there is a lot to do tonite, but if you live here, it will be worth your whilte to fit this in. Refreshments will be served.

Ingmar Bergman’s 1952 feature stars Harriet Andersson as a self-centered adolescent temptress who manages a brief romantic interlude with an errand boy (Lars Ekborg) before walking out in boredom, leaving him to care for their illegitimate child.

Second Feature: Persona (1966). Bergman at his most brilliant as he explores the symbiotic relationship that evolves between an actress suffering a breakdown in which she refuses to speak, and the nurse in charge as she recuperates in a country cottage. Time: 8:00 PM

First Feature: Hour of the Wolf (1968). "A brilliant Gothic fantasy about an artist who has disappeared, leaving only a diary. Through that diary we meet a classic Bergman hero haunted by darkness, demons and the creatures of his imagination until he is destroyed by them.

Second Feature: The Silence (1963). Whether this strange amalgam of various states of loneliness and lust articulates a message may be questionable, but it does, at least, resolve into a vaguely affecting experience that moves one like a vagrant symphony. Ummm, you guessed it! A film for Bergman lovers.

Bicycle Route on Sundays in Merida

Yucatan Living The Bici-Ruta
The Bici-Ruta begins early, at 8:00 AM, though we see them setting up as early as 7:00 am, and ends at noon. The route begins in Ermita and San Juan Parks, passes through the Centro up Calle 60 and then travels down Paseo de Montejo, to include Fiesta Americana. If you want to play chess, go to the sidewalk outside the Museum of Anthropology on Paseo de Montejo at 9 am and pick up a game! There is a complete listing of activities, including sports, music, and craft events on the Bici-Ruta website.

Yucatan Living Sunday at the MACAY
There is a musical concert in the garden at the MACAY Museum, just off the Paseo de la Revolución next to the main cathedral. If the Merida en Domingo crowd starts to get to you, go to the museum (entrance is free). Sit around the fountain or walk through the galleries and listen to the live music.

Yucatan Living35th Maya-Caribe Tennis Tournament
Yucatan Living is reporting this event early so that tennis players around the Peninsula will have time to register for the tournament. Club Venados, in Valladolid , will host the 35th Maya-Caribe Tennis Tournament on February 2nd and 3rd . Competition will be in both singles and doubles, with prizes awarded only for first and second place. Winners will be determined by direct elimination. Participants may register at Club Venados or by telephoning Professor Alfredo Ariona Pacheco at (985) 856-3948 or (985) 107-4311.

  1. The Merida festival program says that the Sunday 8:00 pm event, Gracias a la Vida, has been canceled (would hate to have someone show up and be disappointed).
