Holiday Week Events in Merida

Coming Soon: German Sculpture

For the past six years, Merida has been building its reputation as The City of Sculpture with outdoor exhibits along Paseo Montejo and in the Passage of the Revolution. In 2006, we spent a year with the sculpture of Spain. In 2007, it was the sculpture of Japan. Now, our scenery is soon to change again. The new outdoor sculpture will be from Germany. We can hardly wait to see what they are bringing.

Monday (Lunes) December 24, 2007

Note: The Merida English Library will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (Dec. 26). All activities for those days are canceled.

Yucatan Living Midnight mass will be held in churches around Yucatan. The choirs performing at the Cathedral in Merida are always world class. Midnight mass in Yucatan, whether in the Cathedral or in a small rural village, is always well worth attending.

Yucatan Living Boxing Day – M.E.L. is Closed Today
Some may wonder what in the world Boxing Day could be, while others – of British or Canadian extraction – know full well that this is a holiday of many definitions. This is the day, in England, where people swim in the freezing ocean to raise money for charity. It is also a day when stores throughout the United Kingdom have their after-Christmas sales. For some, it is a day to play sports and just have fun. The roots of Boxing Day lie in the Feast of St. Stephen. In honor of St. Stephen’s service to the poor, the wealthy in England would box up gifts and bring them to the less fortunate on what they call St. Stephen’s Day. The holiday gradually evolved into today’s wide variety of Boxing Day activities. Whatever the reason, we are sure that all of us can use an extra day to recover from our Christmas dinner.

Those of us who live in Yucatan have no idea how lucky we are to be able to attend these performances whenever we like and at prices that anyone can afford.

Saturday (Sabado) December 29, 2007

Please be careful this weekend and throughout the coming days. We suspect that New Year’s revelry will begin at the close of work today and extend through Tuesday night. For your own safety, remember to have a designated driver. If not, even if you don’t have an accident, Yucatan has quite a few new DUI laws that went into effect last summer (as you know if you are an avid reader of this website). Yucatan Living hopes everyone has a wonderful time and makes it through the next four days unscathed!
