Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living There are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning during the month of March. Yucatecos, throughout the state, are enjoying a two-week long holiday called Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the biggest religious and cultural events of the year.

Yucatan Living La Solidaire du ChocolatLa Solidaire du Chocolat
Progreso, Yucatan, is the place to be this week! Not only is it Semana Santa – but its time for the boats of La Solidaire du Chocolat to begin arriving and there are events planned every day for the next twelve days! This is the second La Solidaire du Chocolat, which is the only trans-Atlantic Class 40 Sailboat Regatta in the world. It is a race for charity and to build a stronger relationship between France and Yucatan.  A quick look at the schedule shows the following:

With the Snowbirds leaving for home, it is time to reorganize for the summer. This is also a perfect time to become a part of M.E.L.L.’s new programs, as well as to help grow and improve services. If you care about the Merida English Language Library and are willing and able to commit to a few hours each month, then this is just the place for you. Please come by and fill out a volunteer application. Better yet, come and join Lewie Conner, Volunteer Coordinator, in the M.E.L.L. garden, Saturday, May 5th, 11:00 AM. Lewie will review the M.E.L.L. Volunteer Handbook, give a short history of the Merida English Language Library, and explain some of the areas where your help would be appreciated. Lewie is ready to answer your questions about volunteering at the M.E.L.L.

Yucatan Living 1st Annual Akumal Comedy Festival: April 19 – 21, 2012
This comedy festival is brought to us by Stand Up! Records. This completely free comedy festival will feature over a dozen professional comedians from the United States performing seven shows in four distinct venues in Akumal over three days. One of the comedians will be Merida’s own Mel Fleming (of Mel and Blossom). This Akumal Comedy Festival 2012festival will be fundraising to build a playground for the local children of the Akumal Pueblo. As part of the festival, local Akumal children will perform a specially choreographed dance routine at 5 of the 7 shows.
Location: Akumal is located on the Caribbean Coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is a small town, so the activity of this fundraiser will be evident.

Yucatan Living 2012 Whale Shark Festival: June 15 – 17, 2012
Swim with Whale Sharks and help support environmental education at the same time. Ceviche Tours is donating its entire Whale Shark Festival profit to Amigos del Isla Contoy, a 501c3 non-profit that then provides support for the education of the local population on sustainable marine conservation and ecotourism. There can sometimes be as many as 200 whale sharks feeding near Isla Mujeres, so don’t miss your chance to see them.
