Merida Events: A Week for Art

This Week… starting May 02, 2011

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Tecoh Fiesta: May 3 through May 5
This fiesta is dedicated to Santa Cruz. Tecoh lies on the southeastern boundary of the Municipality of Merida. Look for talented artisans making woven hemp hammocks and carved wooden chests in Tecoh. …and the food in Tecoh is great! Before you decide that Tecoh may be too far off the grid for you, take a look at what you can expect to find in Tecoh

Yucatan Living Uayma Fiesta: May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Uayma is just to the west of both Temozon and Valladolid, and just south of Espita. We figure that places Uayma just about in the middle of most of the important Mayan events in history. There is a beautiful, 16th century convent and temple (Santo Domingo) in Uayma that was burned during the Caste War, but still retains much of its beauty. And, while we usually think of pottery as coming from directly south of Merida, the making of pottery is the most important work of the artisans in Uayma. Do try to stop in Uayma the next time you go to Valladolid or to Temozon. We’ve been there, took the photos and wrote about it, so we know you’ll be glad you did.

Yucatan Living Sacalum Fiesta : May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Sacalum is right on the way to anywhere you want to go in southwestern Yucatan. It is just past Tecoh and Abala, and just this side of Ticul and Muna. Lots of agriculture, cattle and horses here, so look for great leatherwork. Visit Pueblos America for a google map to Sacalum.

On May 14, he will lead El Coro (short for Coro Latino-Americano Pittsburgh) in a performance in Pittsburgh – then hop a plane to Merida and practice, practice, practice for three performances during the last week in May. His three performances in Merida include:

One Response to “Merida Events: A Week for Art”

  1. This is always the first email I open and am never disappointed. Wish I could get this everyday makes me really want to get back as soon as possible. It has snowed the last three days in Santa Fe, NM.

I'd like to be notified by email when someone replies
