Merida Events: AANY and Music

This Week… starting November 28, 2011

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Calotmul Fiesta: December 01-December 08Calotmul Yucatan
In keeping with the season of the year, this fiesta is in honor of la Inmaculada Concepción. The Municipality of Calotmul is about as rural as it gets, in Yucatan or anyplace else on Earth. This municipality is bordered on two sides by Tizimin, on a third side by Temozon, and on the fourth side by Espita. There are fewer than 4,000 inhabitants in Calotmul and its economy is based on agriculture. If you’ve been looking for the real cowboys of Yucatan (and maybe for a really fine saddle), you have found the right place. The main product of the artisans of Calotmul is Talabartería… which translates as saddlery, harness-maker’s shops and leather goods shops. This is also where you can get a hammock made from hemp. Ask for hamacas de cáñamo. However, just because Calotmul is "a little bit country," doesn’t mean the people are not interested in education and quality of life for their children. This is the community where children are not only taking English lessons, but also music lessons on woodwinds. We strongly encourage everyone to visit this fiesta to let the people of Calotmul know that we know they are there, and support everything they are doing for themselves and for their community.

Yucatan Living Sotuta Fiesta: December 03 – December 12
Sotuta is located in the South-Central part of the state, in the heart of the Mayan world. This fiesta is in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, whose “day” in Mexico is December 12. The main work of the artisans of Sotuta is in leather. For those who are interested in Mayan history, Sotuta was the home of Nachi-Cocom, the principal cacique who rebelled against the Spanish in the early 1500s. His lifetime is thought to span approximately from 1510 to 1556. For those who are interested in more recent history, Sotuta is also the birthplace of Justiniano Carrillo Pasos, the father of 13 politically active children, one of whom was Governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto. This is a trip worth taking just for the history! See Bicycle Yucatan’s wonderful pictures of Sotuta HERE.

Yucatan Living Xmatkuil – The Yucatan State Fair: November 11- December 04
If you have not visited the Yucatan State Fair in the small municipality of Xmatkuil, just outside of Merida, hurry up, this is the last week of this once in a year fair. The complete list of events can be found in this Yucatan Living article.

Yucatan Living Popular Music: Meeting of the Fifth Generation
Every once in a while, there is a generation of entertainers that dominates the industry for the remainder of their lives. Someone usually gives them a catchy name (i.e. Brat Pack) and they wear it proudly. Any time you hear the term “Meeting of the Fifth Generation,” you can be sure the event will be in the “must see” category. Most of the following 5th Generation of Singers in Yucatanperformers started out together as in their teens and now they are revered as the grand royalty of music in Yucatan. Their old Fifth Generation videos from the 1980s are actually on YouTube. The hair and clothes are a sight to behold, but they were talented then and they’ve still got it going on. The featured performer is Sergio Esquivel. Now, watch as the names of super stars begin to roll by: Maricarmen Perez, Angelica Balado, Ligia Camara, Beatriz Cervera, Marilu Basulto, Victor Martinez, Elsy Acatitla, Felipe de la Cruz, Fernando Leal, Rudy Vallado, Roberto Andrade, Javier Lezama, Eduardo Rodriguez, Felissa Estrada, Roberto Arcila, Pinzy, Lenny Sanchez, Graciela Medina and Griselda Prieto, Melina Ruz, Wily Burgos, Jose Antonio Ceballos and Ramon Triay. What an amazing list of musical artists and composers! …and their director is quite the well-known artist himself. Musical Director for the evening is Pedro Carlos Herrera. The Fifth Generation was his idea and he is currently the Conductor of the Orquesta Típica Yukalpetén. Most of these performers have been performing this Meeting of the Quinta Generation together since the 1980s. You won’t find a better lineup anywhere!
