In the City This Week

There are many “must see” performances in Merida this week, and all of them are free! The result is that the only way to get in to see them will be to get an advance ticket at the box office. Look through the events, choose what you want to see, then get your free tickets as early as possible.

Yucatan Living Vaqueria de AnimasVaqueria de Animas 2009
Be sure to see this performance. It will include the regular Folkloric Ballet, as well as the Children’s Folkloric Ballet and a performance by the Folkloric Ballet of the Older Adults, but with a special twist for a special occasion! We sometimes forget that both the state and municipality have ballets and musical groups for each age. This is a chance to see the best of the best!

Yucatan Living Tuesday of Trova: Trio Los Condes
This group is under the direction of Rosendo Palomo. They are a long-time favorite in Yucatan and one of the defining groups for Yucatan’s Trova.

Yucatan Living Movie: Grindhouse
This 2007 “terror” movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez. Two full length feature horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film feature. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies.

Yucatan Living Music and Dance Spectacular!
This is a “must see” event! The Ballet Folklorico of the State will be under the direction of Raul Castillo Alfaro and the Orquesta Jaranera del Mayab will be under the direction of Felipe de Jesus Chi Naal. Performances such as this are not nearly as often as we would like, so don’t miss this one!

Yucatan Living Tango with Piazzolla
Tonight’s performance is by Cuarteto Vivace. The name of the performance is in reference to the new tango of the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, who introduced jazz and classical music into his tango compositions. Expect performances tonight by Edgar Sulú, Violín; Eduardo Canto, Violín; Sergio de la Vega, Viola; Adrian Carrillo, Cello; David Perez, Contrabajo; Luis Luna, Tenor; Edgar Boffill, Piano; Mauricio Bonfiglio, Batería; Venice Chan, Oboe

Yucatan Living Traditional Yucateca Concert
This is another “must see” performance… right across the street and starting an hour later. It is in honor of poet/songwriter Jorge Peniche y Peniche. The lineup of stars is phenomenal! Ligia Camera, Judith Perez Romero, Rondalla Universitaria de Yucatan, and the Dueto of Jorge and Julian. It just doesn’t get any better than this!

Yucatan Living Movie: The Haunted Strangler (aka Grip of the Strangler)The Haunted Strangler
This 1958 movie was directed by Robert Day. It stars Boris Karlof. If you could only pick one movie for the week, this would be the one! A writer investigating the execution of a serial killer known as "The Haymarket Strangler" 20 years previously begins to suspect that the wrong man might have been hanged. However, when he picks up a scalpel used by the murderer, he finds himself possessed by the killer’s spirit and begins committing similar murders.

Yucatan Living Concert: Guitarras de Merida
This marvelous trio is made up of members of UADY’s Guitar Orchestra. They are never, if at all possible, to be missed! We’ve not seen them ourselves, much to our chagrin, but we hear that a whole orchestra of guitars is breathtaking. And these guys and gals are good!

Yucatan Living Movie: To Kill a MockingbirdTo Kill a Mockingbird
Neither the book, nor the movie needs any introduction from us. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the all time best books and best movies beloved by all Americans of conscience. Stars include Gregory Peck and Robert Duval. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his kids against prejudice.

Yucatan Living Movie: Los Croncrimenes (aka Time Crimes)
This 2007 movie was directed by Nacho Vigalondo. It is a movie from Spain, in which a man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. He finds himself in what will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences.

Yucatan Living Movie: Raging Bull
This 1980 movie is directed by Martin Scorsese. An emotionally self-destructive boxer’s journey through life, as the violence and temper that leads him to the top in the ring, destroys his life outside it. Stars include Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci, and Theresa Saldana. The movie is shot in black and white, but after about two minutes you don’t notice it… the movie is full of color!

Yucatan Living Film:Documentary: El Acordeon del Diablo
Tells the story of that great old man of Caribbean music, Pacho Rada. It is the tale of a singer and composer who first held an accordion at the age of four and was never to let go of it again. A man who throughout his life travelled around Colombia, moving from village to village and from party to party, singing and playing for a few centavos. He’s 93 now and lives in a corrugated iron shack on the outskirts of Santa Marta in Colombia, whilst his songs climb up the hit parades.

This 2004 movie was directed by Edgar Wright. It is a comedy/horror film, starring Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield, and Nick Frost. A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend, reconciling his relationship with his mother, and dealing with an entire community that has returned from the dead to eat the living.

Yucatan Living October 30: Brazos Abiertos: 3rd Annual Fall Event
Brazos Abiertos Inc (501-c3 US non profit) (Foundation BAI) will be holding its 3rd Annual Fall Event, Silent Auction & Fashion Show, featuring the Spring Summer 2010 Collection by Alexei. The proceeds of this event will go to support education related to sexually transmitted diseases, as well as to ongoing support for their HIV-AIDS projects.

Yucatan Living Exhibition of Altars in The Corridor of the Souls
All six public cemeteries will be open on Oct. 30 and ready to receive visitors for "The Day of the Dead" until Nov. 2.

The General Cemetery and Xoclan will have special lighting and will remain open 24 hours a day from Friday Oct. 30th to Monday Nov. 2nd at 6:00 PM. 

Access to the General Cemetery will be on Calle 81-A and the exit on Calle 66. Regarding Xoclan, entrance and exit for personal vehicles will be on the west on the avenue of the San Pedro Church. Access thru Juan Pablo II Ave. will be only for public transportation.

The Ayuntamiento has altars at Parque de la Ermita. They start setting everything up at 2:00 PM on October 30. The show is somewhere between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. If you arrive after 8:00 PM, everything will be over. Over 200 altars are expected to be part of this exhibition.

Catholic Masses will be held on Monday, Nov 2nd at Xoclan at 10 AM; at the General Cemetery at 11 AM; and at Florido and Chuburna at 9 AM.

7:00 PM: Artistic presentation in the Panteón Florido (Calle 66 and Calle 89)
7:30 PM: The Children’s Procession begins, marking the way with flowers.

This 2000 movie was directed by Mary Harran. This movie stars Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon. A wealthy New York investment banking executive hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies.

Yucatan Living Movie: The Story of the Weeping Camel
Springtime in the Gobi Desert, South Mongolia. A family of nomadic shepherds assists the births of their camel herd. One of the camels has an excruciatingly difficult delivery but, with help from the family, out comes a rare white colt. Despite the efforts of the shepherds, the mother rejects the newborn, refusing it her milk and her motherly love. When any hope for the little one seems to have vanished, the nomads send their two young boys on a journey through the desert, to a backwater town in search of a musician who is their only hope for saving the colt’s life.

Yucatan Living Sarah Brightman in Concert at Chichen Itza Sarah Brightman Concert at Chichen Itza
The Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan, along with some of the best voices in the state, will perform, on October 31st, with Sarah Brightman at Chichen Itza. Formerly married to Andrew Lloyd Weber, Ms. Brightman is a veteran of The Phantom of the Opera and has sung with both the London and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. Until now, only Yucatan’s beloved Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo have sung at this archaeological wonder. Elton John is expected to sing at Chichen Itza in April, 2010, and there is talk of inviting both Paul McCartney and David Copperfield at some time in the future.

This will be a performance in which you will hear the voices of David Romeo, Abril, Ilka, Yuly and Angel. They are such an accomplished group and have represented us on the local, national, and international levels. They truly define our culture for the future and should not be missed.

Yucatan Living State of Yucatan’s Hanal Pixan EventsPlaza Grande During Hanal Pixan
We are very lucky to live in a place where the Center of the Municipality is also the Center of the State. We get to enjoy events put on by both of them!
On Oct. 31, an exhibition of altars will open in the Plaza Grande. The best time for viewing will be between 10 am and 3 pm… they start disassembling them about 5 pm. There will be a performance of regional comic theater in the Esplanade at the Cathedral at 8:00 PM. Both events are free.

We know that we are now developing an expat community that includes several children. This is a “must see” performance for them. The Orchestra and Choir of Centro de Iniciacion Musical Infantil is giving a classical concert that will become part of the cultural experience of every child lucky enough to grow up in Yucatan.

Yucatan Living International Women’s Club: 25th Anniversary & Reunion:
November 7 through 14
This will be a week-long reunion for the members of IWC throughout the years. The only requirements to join this group are that the lady speaks English. Today, the membership can proudly say that its members’ origins lie in over 20 nations. During their reunion, they will go on a number of tours, eat at some marvelous restaurants, and enjoy such cultural offerings as local serenades and a special program prepared for them by the Symphony. This Anniversary and Reunion are being announced early so that all IWC members, from around the world, will have time to get here. Yucatan Living Alternative Health Fair:
November 14

The Merida English Library will host what we are pretty sure is the First Annual Alternative Health Fair. The fair will open with a Mayan healing ceremony led by traditional Mayan healers. After that, visitors are encouraged to visit the different practitioners who will be on hand to explain what they do. There will be massage therapists, homeopathic practitioners, acupuncturists and Pilates and Yoga teachers. Other disciplines represented include reflexology, aromatherapy and a couple that sponsors yearly free clinics in Piste.

Yucatan Living November 26: Juan Luis Guerra in Concert
Dominican singer, songwriter, and self-producer who has sold 20 million records, and won numerous awards including nine Latin Grammy Awards two Grammy Awards, and two Latin Billboard Music Awards. He won 5 Latin Grammy awards in 2007 tying him with Juanes for the record of most Latin Grammys won in one night.
