Merida Events: Artisan and Construction Expo

This Week… starting June 03 , 2013

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Opichen Fiesta: June 8 through June 12
This fiesta is in honor of San Bernabe. Opichen is not a large municipality. It is almost surrounded by Kopoma, Maxcanu, and Halacho, with a little bit of its southern border shared with the State of Campeche. 80% of the people speak Maya and Nahuatl. This is cattle and pork country, so look for excellent leatherwork here.

Yucatan Living Quintana RooFiesta: June 8 through June 12
This fiesta is also in honor of San Bernabe. Yes, Yucatan really does have a municipality named Quintana Roo. Quintana Roo is a little triangular municipality in the center of the state, just east of Tunkas and just north of Dzitas. There are less than 1,000 people in the municipality and over half of them speak Maya. This is a rural municipality that makes its living from a variety of agricultural industries, so look for excellent leatherwork here as well.

Yucatan Living Movie: Cuates de Australia
The stark landscape of a remote stretch of plains in Coahuila, Mexico is as harsh as it is spectacular. And yet these people maintain their good cheer, with a combination of humility, acceptance, and work ethic. Their connection to the earth and sky seems to give them strength, and the hope for rain and new life – expressed most vividly in a through-story of a young couple expecting their first child – doesn’t waver even when they have no choice but to leave their land, temporarily, in a mass exodus.
