Merida Events: Celebrate the City!

This Week… starting January 17, 2011

Yucatan Living The Festival of the City of Merida
January 5 through January 30
Festival of the City
This festival will celebrate the 469th anniversary of the founding of the City of Merida. There will be approximately 1,000 events held in the city in a 3 ½ week period of time. Every year, this festival grows and the events become more spectacular. Guest nation this year is Colombia, so look for Colombian art and music throughout the month of January. We are beginning to get dates on some of the events and will enter them in our calendar, as well as presenting them – week-by-week – here in the Events column, so check back regularly to see our updated calendar.

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living When we open our calendar and see that there are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning this week, we know that the next week is likely to be a blockbuster – and that is where we find ourselves this week. While there are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning this week, next week will see statewide fiestas that will last until Feb. 2, which is Dia de la Virgen de la Candelaria, also spoken of as Dia de la Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.
Since Candelaria fiestas won’t begin until next week, we recommend staying in the city to enjoy the rest of the 469th Anniversary of the Founding of the City of Merida.

  1. Is there some way we could get your weekly email earlier in the week, perhaps on Sunday? I got it on Tuesday and would like to have attended one of the Monday events listed. I do appreciate your guide so much – it’s so helpful when you’re only a part-time resident. You provide a wonderful service.

  2. Hi Mary Lou… Well, we try to get it out as early on Monday as possible, but it isn’t always possible. We also try to put things into the Month-At-A-Glance calendar as soon as we can, but we don’t always hear about things with enough time to give YOU enough time. In fact, it’s an issue that we have brought up to the state and city government on multiple occasions.

I can promise you we’ll try to get the Events out sooner. Also, you might want to sign up to “Like” our Facebook page… we sometimes will put events on there that we didn’t have time for on the website.

    Thanks for caring!
