Merida Events: Christmas Music

This Week… starting December 14, 2009

Yucatan Living Municipality of Merida’s Winter Book Fair
While we realize that many of our readers do not speak Spanish, we also know that quite a few do – and many of you are history buffs as well. All of these Book Fair events will be in Spanish but, looking down the list, we realized that a significant number of them will be introducing books that we just can’t wait to read – and we didn’t want you to miss the chance to be at their launching as well.
Dec. 11 – Dec. 20 All Events are Free
Dec. 11: Inauguration in Corridors of City Hall, 11:00 AM
Dec. 11: Tribute to Calero Manuel Rosado in Hall of the City Council, 8:00 PM

Prohispen is the cultural center supported by Asociación Civil “Patronato Prehistoria Peninsular, AC, whose mission it is to preserve the collective memory of the peninsula. They have a wonderful website that all history buffs will enjoy. You can find it here. This event takes place at Centro Cultural Jose Marti / Parque de las Americas, 1:00 PM

Dec. 14: Book Launch: “Popol Vuh en breves palabras”. Trilingue, de Maldonado Editores del Mayab by Prof. Santiago Gómez y Cámara. We don’t know how one writes such a book “in brief,” but we’re game. How about you? This event takes place at Centro Cultural José  Martí  / Parque de las Américas, 7:00 PM
Dec. 17: Book Launch: “Del Líbano…lo que debemos recordar. Resembrando raíces” (From Lebanon… What We Remember. Replanting Roots) by María Teresa Cuevas Seba. Municipal FIestas This WeekTizimin Fiesta

Yucatan Living Tizimin Fiesta 26 Day Event
Dec. 5 through Jan. 10
This is a huge fair in the heart of Yucatan’s horse country. Visit the Tizimin Website to see loads of pictures of this great rea. Tizimin is that large municipality that borders the Gulf of Mexico and Quintana Roo, as well as extending far into the interior of the State. This gives this municipality access to all of the best of the entire peninsula. Their fairs and religious celebrations are always "must attend" events.

Yucatan Living Tixpéual 4 Day Event
Dec. 17 through Dec. 20
This is the annual "County Fair" of this municipality. Tixpéual is bordered on the north by Tixkokob, on the south by Kanasin and Acanceh, on the east by Seye and Tixkokob, and on the west by Kanasin and Merida. Did somebody say “location-location-location?” Tixpéual is one of those places where, when you tell folks you live "in a little village on the Yucatan Peninsula," you neglect to add that it is practically in sight of the city. The ethnicity of almost half the population of Tixpéual is Otomi and that is the language they speak. Read more about their history HERE.  Since there are fewer than 300,000 Otomi left in Mexico, this group of people is one of the treasures of Yucatan. We hope you take a look at this little municipality. Great things are coming from here in the not too distant future.

Yucatan Living Espita Fiesta 10 Day Event
Dec. 19 through Dec. 28
This fiesta is in honor of the niño Dios. Espita is in the East-Central part of our state, just to the east of Dzitas and just under 2 hours from Merida. Lots of cattle ranches and cowboys here, and all of the good food and leather work that goes along with them. There are always bullfights at this fair, along with a 15 km cattle drive from Sucilá to Espita. You can also find ramilletes at this fair.

Yucatan Living Tunkas Fiesta 5 Day EventTunkas Fiesta
Dec. 20 through Dec. 24
This fiesta is in honor of St. Thomas the Apostle. Tunkas is located just this side of Izamal. Look in Tunkas for huipiles, hemp hammocks, and pottery. Tunkas (Wall of Stones) belonged to the Chieftanship of Cupul during the pre-Histanic era. It is the product of an ancient Mayan civilization that is mentioned in The Book of Chilam Balm of Chumayel. (full text here). About half of the population is Mayan today and that is the language of all the indigenous people of Tunkas.

One Response to “Merida Events: Christmas Music”

  1. This is a fantastic calendar of events. Unfortunately I do not live in merida yet but do visit often. This is one of the many reasons that I love Merida/Yucatan. So much going on all of the time.
Will the Yucatones have a regular venue in the near future?
    Happy Holidays
