Merida Events: Dance Season

This Week… starting May 14, 2012

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Uayma Fiesta: May 15San Isidro Labrador Festivities in Yucatan
This is a fiesta in honor of San Isidro labrador. Uayma is just south of Espita and just this side of Valladolid and Temozon. If you are looking for good country living, this is the place to visit and/or to live. Lots of great pottery here too!

Yucatan Living Kopoma Fiesta : May 15
This fiesta is in honor of San Isidro Labrador. Kopoma is in a great location in the west of Yucatan. It is in the heart of some of the best examples of Mayan historical monuments and culture – just east of Maxcanu, between Chochola and Opichen, and just west of Muna, Abala, and Uman. It is as if all of those magical pieces fit together with one small piece missing and someone named the little connector "Kopoma." Look for traditional hammocks and embroidery here, as well as cenotes and a short ride to many Mayan sites.

Yucatan Living Baca Fiesta: May 15 – May 19
This fiesta is in honor of San Isidro Labrador. Baca is a great place to visit! Its only 28 km northeast of the city – just this side of Motul. If anyone is interested in living close enough to the city to enjoy everything from its cultural opportunities to world class health care – but far enough away to be cool in the heat of the summer, this is the area of Yucatan you are looking for. For more, you can now visit Baca Online.

Yucatan Living Santa Elena Fiesta: May 17
This fiesta is in honor of Santos Reyes de San Mateo. Look in Santa Elena for Uxmal, Kabah, Nohpat, Xcoh, and Muchich, some of the best archaeological sites in all of Yucatan.

Yucatan Living Tixkokob Fiesta: May 17 to 22San Bernandino Festivities in Yucatan
This fiesta is in honor of San Bernardino. Look here for leatherwork and hammocks. Tixkokob is just to the east of Merida and south of Conkal. Just a tidbit of history: Felipe Carrillo Puerto was from Motul. When he was 12, he fell in love with a circus performer and ran away with her to Tixkokob. His mother found him, but they wouldn’t give him up because he didn’t look like a child. His dad had to get a letter from the local police in Motul to the effect that Felipe really was a minor. His mother was not amused. This is a great area of Yucatan and this is a wonderful time of year to go visiting.

This art auction will include 30 works by a variety of European artists, with many of the paintings reproductions of quite famous masterpieces. Yucatan’s Paralympic team includes twelve athletes that will participate in weight-lifting, javelin and shot put. The athletes each need a special chair in order to compete and the children need a new vehicle to help them move from place to place. The paintings offered at auction will begin at $3,000 pesos and there will be a catalog of the paintings included with each invitation. There will also be a cocktail party for those who have invitations and catalogs on the evening of the auction. This is such a worthy cause and there is not much time left to meet this need before the June National Paralympic competition. Please attend this event and help in whatever way you can. Hard work deserves reward and these twelve athletes have earned their place in these games, as well as our support.

Yucatan Living Season XVIII: Yucatan Symphony OrchestraOrquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan
For this program we will have the luxury of a guest conductor, Canadian Marc David, director of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and l’Symphonique de Longueuil in Quebec. This program will be devoted to major overtures from the history of music. The first belongs to the opera ‘The Magic Flute’, by W. A. Mozart. Similar in importance and popularity is the opera ‘The Barber of Seville’, one of the great masterpieces of comedy in music. Beethoven wrote four overtures to ‘Fidelio’, his only opera. The first overture, ‘Leonora’, was dismissed even before the premiere of the opera. ‘Leonora No. 2′ was written for the premiere of 1805. For the re-release of 1806, ‘Leonora Overture No. 3′ is a great musical achievement and very popular. The overture to ‘The Mastersingers’ was performed long before the completed Wagner opera. It consists of an opening and a closing, the stately procession of the Meistersinger interludes evoking Walter and Eva’s love. The Overture ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by Tchiakovsky is based on the work of Shakespeare and is the final piece in the program.
