Merida Events: Earth Day 2012

This Week… starting April 16, 2012

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan LivingTahmek Fiesta: April 18
This fiesta is in honor of San Pedro Apostol. Tahmek is not all that far to the east of Merida (just past Seye), and is well into horse country – so look for great leatherwork here!Tekax, Yucatan

Yucatan Living Tekax Fiesta: April 18 through 22
This fiesta is a celebration of Spring. Tekax holds a central place in Yucatan history, and is today a great place to visit. It has huge colonial churches and plenty of archaeological sites to see. Look for leatherwork and jewelry and, in a town nearby named Pencuyut, look for hammocks. Tekax is the big municipality that goes right down to the southern point of our state, so its southern neighbors are the states of Campeche and Quintana Roo.

Yucatan Living Tahdziu Fiesta: April 18
This fiesta is also in honor of San Pedro Apostol. Tahdziu is located just south of Yaxcaba, and north and west of Peto. If you have been looking for either a cotton or hemp hammock – or embroidery done by hand – Tahdziu is the place for you! Tahdziu has a large gremio that is a part of this festival… a great event if you can catch it.

Yucatan Living Orquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan: Program 9
The Sicilian Vespers is about the historical event of the killing of the French in Sicily in 1282, an event which caused the disappearance of the domain of Charles I of Anjou on the island. This is a powerful overture and will be heard in Merida for the second time. Also, “The Campanela” will be directed by the concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City, the Polish-Mexican Sebastian Kwapisz, who will demonstrate the virtuosity and melodic style of gypsy music. About the Suite No. 3, Tchaikovsky wrote "My intention was to write a symphony, but the title does not matter." Composed in 1884, this piece was very well received by critics and has universal popularity. The final movement, Theme and Variations, is a wonderful example of the creative of the genius composer.
