Merida Events: Fairs, Tennis, Guitars

Yucatan State Fair 2012

Yucatan Living Feria Yucatan at Xmatkuil: November 9 through December 2
This year, there will be more than 1,000 exhibitors and 1,800 artistic, sporting, cultural and recreational events for all ages. The fair provides space for commercial and business activity, while maintaining a family atmosphere. The main attractions will be the rides, the Atayde Brothers Circus, the Robotic Zoo, the Dolphinarium, the Extreme Magic Show and 4-D films. Entrance to these attractions ranges from $10 to $15 pesos. There will be free shows in El Teatro del Pueblo, as well as events in Palenque, the Lienzo Charro, the Pista de Calificaciones and the Plaza Monumental.
Location: at the Xmatkuil Fairgrounds, Calle 50 south of the city.

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Tekanto Fiesta: November 21 through November 26
This fair is in honor of Santo Cristo de Citilcún. You really want to go and look at the work of the artisans in Tekantó because they make traditional hammocks, the cotton huipiles are cross-stitched by hand, and they make many other articles from sosquil, which is a biodegradable material made from 100% sisal ( Henequén) yarn. The Municipality of Tekantó is located to the east of Merida, just south of Suma and Teya and just north of Izamal.

Yucatan Living Musical Comedy Theater: Lysistrata
This show is based on the original play Lysistrata, written by Aristophanes and originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC. Tonight’s performance is by the State Theater Company and RIA Theater Company. The free adaptation and direction are by Ricardo Adrian.

If you could only choose one event to attend this week, this would have to be the one. These two ladies are musical royalty in Yucatan, and deservedly so. We never get to see enough of these two grand ladies together or separately.

Tracing Aleida

Yucatan Living Movie: Tracing Aleida
The Mexican Aleida never knew her parents. At the age of two, she was separated from them and raised by others. It was the time of the ‘dirty war’ in Mexico, during which numerous opponents of the regime were rounded up, tortured and murdered. Now, some 30 years later, Aleida has found several relatives thanks to a magazine article, but her parents’ fate is still a mystery.

Merida Chamber Orchestra in Concert

Yucatan Living Concert: Chamber Orchestra of Merida
The title of this performance is Capricho por voloncelo, which translates to Whimsy for Cello. This orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Jose Luis Chan Sabido, is one of the unsung treasures of Yucatan and this should be a wonderful performance.

Yucatan Living Bird Photography and Drawing Contest: “Unidos por la aves”:
Winners will be announced at the opening of the Bird-a-Thon on November 23rd at 7:00 PM at the Central Building of UADY (Calle 60 # 491-A x 56, Merida Centro). This contest is open to children, young people, the general public and specialized photographers. The main objective is to promote knowledge, appreciation and conservation of birds in Yucatan and, at the same time, to promote a local market for bird watching. Ixil Farmers Market in Yucatan

Yucatan Living Mercado Campesino de Ixil (Ixil Farmer’s Market!): All Day: December 16
This market is a joint project between Proyecto Itzaes, Rotary International, Palo Alto Rotary, Club Rotario Nuevas Generaciones de Merida and the Town of Ixil, Yucatan. The purpose is to offer local and regional producers and artisans an alternative, local place to sell their products at better prices. This is a “tents with tables and chairs” kind of event with lots of fresh and prepared foods, local honey, arts and crafts, handmade clothing and much, much more. There will even be live music and pony rides.
Location: Getting there is easy. There are plenty of signs to guide your way from Chicxulub Pueblo.
