Merida Events: Festival of the City

This Week… starting January 03, 2011

Yucatan Living The Festival of the City of Merida
January 5 through January 30

This festival will celebrate the 469th anniversary of the founding of the City of Merida. There will be approximately 1,000 events held in the city in a 3 ½ week period of time. Every year, this festival grows and the events become more spectacular. Guest nation this year is Colombia, so look for Colombian art and music throughout the month of January. We are beginning to get dates on some of the events and will enter them in our calendar, as well as presenting them – week-by-week – here in the Events column, so check back regularly to see our updated calendar.

Municipal Fiestas This WeekTizimin Fair 2010

Yucatan Living Tizimin Fiesta: Dec. 15 through Jan. 10
This is a huge fiesta in the heart of Yucatan’s horse country. Visit the Tizimin Website to see loads of pictures of this great area. Tizimin is that large municipality that borders the Gulf of Mexico and Quintana Roo, as well as extending far into the interior of the State. This gives this municipality access to all of the best of the entire peninsula. Their festivals and fiestas are always "must attend" events.

Yucatan Living Chikindzonot Fiesta: Jan. 6th and 7th
This fiesta is in honor of Reyes Magos. Chikindzonot is located just about in the center of our southern border with Quintana Roo. If you are into cenotes and/or the architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries, this is the place for you. Chikindzonot also has more than its share of archaeological monuments at: Xalau, Tamba, Bolmay, Petul, Sotpol, Xuyap, Poxil, Xcoom, Palaban, Xmaos and Xcan. Municipalities like this are the, as yet, unspoiled treasures of our state and we are remiss if we do not visit and support them in any way we can.

This program is carried out by an international institution recognized by the International Committee of the Flag of Peace of the UN-NGO. The cities that have earned this honor (100 Cities in the period 2010 to 2015), must develop a front that shows they are committed to making communication their priority, having an active and engaged citizenry disseminating a culture of peace and human rights, beginning with the right to life, social justice, and environmental balance.

Yucatan Living Multidisciplinary: Canto Gitano. Noche de Lorca
The original idea for this performance came from Francisco Sobero “Tanicho,” local film, television, and movie actor, as well as singer and stage director. This will be a night of devotion to the Spanish poet, dramatist, and theater director Federico del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Garcia Lorca., who was murdered in Spain in 1936 for no other reason than it was believed that he was a homosexual. His body of work has stood the test of time, especially his Gypsy Ballads, which are the basis for this performance. The world is often so foolish in its will to destroy massive amounts of talent, but Lorca’s work remains and continues to move audiences around the world.
