Merida Events: Festival of the City 2010

This Week… starting January 11

January 11-15: Spay and Neuter Clinic… Tell Your Friends! and your Neighborhood!
Bring your pets, your neighbors pets and spread the word. Planned Pethood US and Mexico, along with Yucatan Government, AFAD, UADY and other organizations have a plan to sterilize at least a thousand dogs and cats in Merida and Progreso. Different times and locations. Call 305-2078 for an appointment and locations!

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Dzitas Fiesta  7 Day EventDzitas Fiesta -
January 16 through January 22

This fiesta is in honor of Santa Inés. The Municipality of Dzitas is located in the central-eastern part of the state, just south of Espita. There are fewer than 3,500 people who live in Dzitas, and their main artistic skills are turned toward the making of hammocks. It is the population statistics that are interesting in this municipality. Almost half of the people work in agriculture, while the rest work in manufacturing or go off to work in the oil industry. Over 90% have all the modern utilities coming to their homes and they have plenty of schools, including a college. Two-thirds of the people are indigenous, so the languages spoken in Dzitas are Spanish, Mayan, and Tzetzal. The food and health care are excellent because the birth rate is steady and the death rate is amazingly low. Take a trip out to this fiesta and let us know if you discover their secret to a long and healthy life.

Yucatan Living DIF: Creating Art, Shaping Expectations
In Yucatan, breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 25 and 64. Up to 50% of breast cancer patients in Mexico die – mostly because they did not seek a diagnosis early enough. Prior to surgery, a plaster mold is made of the patient’s breast so that a prosthesis can be made when she becomes a survivor. In this exhibition, 60 survivors have been given their molds and allowed to turn them into works of art. Please come and support these breast cancer survivors as they move into their new lives and bring awareness – and breast cancer education – to women throughout Yucatan. The exhibition will benefit the Center for Orthotics, Prosthetics and Functional Aids Yucatan (CROPAFY) and to promote early detection through self-examination.
