Merida Events: Festival of the City 2012

This Week… starting January 02, 2012

Here at the publishing offices of Yucatan Living, we’re still on a bit of vacation. A lot of other people are too, as you’ll notice in the Events list below. The Christmas season isn’t really over until after Three Kings Day on January 6. This is a family holiday, not a public one. So there are not a lot of public events planned (that we can find) and we haven’t done our usual thorough job, as some of US are still on vacation too. So please do check the Ongoing Events page for things that usually happen every week (no guarantees… This is Mexico), and go out and have a good time wherever you go! We’ll be back, and so will Merida, in full force next week!

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Tizimin Fiesta: December 30 through January 16Tizimin Fiesta and Fair
This is a huge fiesta in the heart of Yucatan’s horse country. Visit theTizimin Website to see loads of pictures of this great area. Tizimin is that large municipality that borders the Gulf of Mexico and Quintana Roo, and extends far into the interior of the State. This combination festival and fiesta runs from the last Friday in one year to the beginning of Carnival (sort of…) in the next… wow! This year, the dates are December 30 to January 16. Activities will include horse racing, cockfighting and exhibitions of registered cattle and agricultural machinery.

Yucatan Living Chikindzonot Fiesta: January 6th and 7th
This fiesta is in honor of Reyes Magos (Magi Kings). Chikindzonot (pronounced chee-KEEN-dzo-nott) is located just about in the center of our southern border with Quintana Roo. If you are into cenotes and/or the architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries, this is the place for you. Chikindzonot also has more than its share of archaeological monuments including Xalau, Tamba, Bolmay, Petul, Sotpol, Xuyap, Poxil, Xcoom, Palaban, Xmaos and Xcan. Municipalities like this are the, as yet, unspoiled treasures of our state and we encourage you all to visit and support them in any way you can.

In The CityFestival of the City of Merida 2012

Yucatan Living The Festival of the City of Merida: January 5 through January 30
This festival will celebrate the 470th anniversary of the founding of the City of Merida. There will be approximately 200 events held in the city in a 3 ½ week period of time. Every year, this festival grows and the events become more spectacular. We are beginning to get dates on some of the events and will enter them in our calendar, as well as presenting them – week-by-week – here in the Events column, so check back regularly to see our updated calendar.
