Merida Events: Fiesta del Tabaco and More!

This Week… starting April 05, 2010

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Only two municipal fiestas begin in Yucatan this week, but we are also listing 8 additional special events that will be taking place in municipalities throughout the state. We hope everyone has an opportunity to see at least one of them.

Yucatan Living
Ticul Fiesta del Tabaco 1 Day EventTicul Fiesta
April 5
This is a one day event held to celebrate the tobacco crop in Ticul. This municipality is located just north of Oxkutzcab and east of Muna and Santa Elena. In Ticul, you will find several craft cooperatives, whose main activity is making pottery. There are also several family workshops in Ticul that are dedicated to making traditional clothing, jewelry, and furniture, as well as fabricating hats, producing embroidered fabric and clothing, making shoes, and making objects from clay. A trip to Ticul would make a great weekend get-away, especially in the heat of the summer.

Yucatan Living
Timucuy Fiesta  6 Day Event
April 10 through April 15
Timucuy is a small municipality on the southeast border of the Municipality of Merida. It is between Merida and Acanceh, north of Tecoh. This is a traditional "county fair" complete with vaquerias and popular dances. The people of Timucuy love their music and you can expect to see traditional Yucateca jarana music and dancing, plus loads of trova and bolero music. The artisans in timucuy make hammocks and, if you’ve been looking for cross-stitch emboidery, this is the place you will find it. Since this is an agricultural municipality, expect good country cooking to be available at this fair.

In the City of MeridaYucatan Spring Festival

Yucatan Living Semana Santa is over, but cultural events still abound in Yucatan, where the 2010 Spring Festival continues until the end of April. This begins that agonizing time of year when every performance is a “must see” and many are taking place at the same time. Needless to say, there is something for everyone available in Yucatan throughout the month of April.

Yucatan Living Movie: Dancing in the Dark
Movies by this title have been made and remade from the 1940s to the present. We think the story is of an abusive father-in-law and his daughter-in-law, who finally musters the courage to tell her husband.
