Merida Events: Fiestas and Film

This Week… starting June 21, 2010

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Suma de Hidalgo Fiesta – 1 Day Event – June 22
This fiesta is in honor of San Bartolomeo. Suma is very close to Merida, right between Teya and Motul. This is the edge of horse country in Yucatan, so the most common product of the artisans in this area is leatherwork.

Yucatan Living Xocchel Fiesta – 6 Day Event – June 24 through June 29 each year
This is the annual Xocchel Fiesta that honors San Juan Bautista, patron saint of the Municipality of Xocchel. If you are looking for a municipality that is off the beaten path – but the beaten path is still nearby – Xocchel should be your destination of choice. This small municipality lies less than an hour southeast of the City of Merida, on the road to Valladolid, and the 21st century has not quite made it there. To see a great map, plus pictures of the area and towns in Xocchel, click on Bicycle Yucatan, our favorite ‘traveling the back roads of Yucatan’ website.

Yucatan Living Panaba Fiesta – 5 Day Event – June 26 through June 30
This is Panaba’s annual fiesta honoring San Pedro and San Pablo. Panaba is just inland to the southeast of San Felipe and Rio Lagartos. Almost everyone there is involved in either fishing or the cattle industry, or both. Languages spoken in Panaba include Mayan and Zapoteco. Look for good food at even the most humble establishment here!

Yucatan Living Cairo Cinema Cafe: Last Days
(2005, France) Director: Gus Van Sant. This film, starring Michael Pitt, Lukas Haas, Pitt’s then-girlfriend Asia Argento, and Nicole Vicius, is a fictionalized account of Kurt Cobain’s last days. Kim Gordon, female member of Sonic Youth, also stars in the film… for Sonic Youth’s fans, perhaps reason enough to see it! Van Sant apparently decided to fictionalize the film, fearing he might be sued by Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love. Good move. The film failed to win any awards, but is probably interesting anyway.

Yucatan Living Movie: The Third Man
