Merida Events: Fiestas for the Virgin

This Week… starting December 05, 2011

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living The Orange Festival in Oxkutzcab: December 2 through 11
This is going to be a great fair. There will be lots of livestock, as well as artisans and shows. Restaurants will be set up so everyone can find something good to eat. They are also going to be giving cooking demonstrations in which audience participation is encouraged. This is a great chance to learn a little more about cooking with a Maya flavor.
Location: Oxkutzcab
Admission: No admission to the fair is listed, but the rides are 15 to 20 pesos.

Yucatan Living Tekax Fiesta: December 8 through December 15Virgen of Guadalupe Festivities
This fiesta is in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Tekax is the relatively large municipality that occupies the southern point of the State of Yucatan. If you are looking for the work of local artisans, in Tekax, they make leather goods and jewelry, and in Pencuyut, they make hamacas (hammocks). These folks have some of the best groceries and sweets in all of Yucatan, so grazing your way through this festival is a “must do.”

Yucatan Living Teabo Fiesta: December 8 through December 12
This fiesta is in honor of Virgen de Guadalupe. If you are going to shop, this is where you will find leatherwork, embroidery by machine or by hand, and those wonderful cotton hammocks. Teabo is located south of Merida, just south of Mayapan, just north of Tekax, and just west of Mani and Akil. Teabo is easy to get to and is one of the most active municipalities in the state. This should be a great fiesta!

Yucatan Living Kaua Fiesta: December 8 through December 12
This fiesta is in honor of the Virgen de la Concepción. There will be vaquerias, bull fights, and popular dances. These are the kinds of places where the description doesn’t tell the whole story because the farther into the interior you go, the better the food gets and the prettier the “typical clothing.” …and they just so happen to hand embroider that “typical clothing” right there. Kaua is a tiny municipality just a little southeast of the center of the state, but it is well worth a visit.

In The City

Yucatan Living Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival: October 21 through December 13
Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival is one of the most important annual events in all of Mexico. This year’s festival is a tribute to the great composer and singer Sergio Esquivel, known throughout Mexico and born in Yucatan. The events are all online and can be viewed from the website of the Annual Festival of the Arts. Yucatan Living will be including events from this festival in our regular Events column so our readers won’t miss anything.

Yucatan Living Movie: Ivan the Terrible
We are unsure which version of this biography has been chosen for this showing, but Russian history is always dramatic and well worth investigating. In 1547, Ivan IV (1530-1584), archduke of Moscow, crowns himself Tsar of Russia and sets about reclaiming lost Russian territory. In scenes of his coronation, his wedding to Anastasia, his campaign against the Tartars in Kazan, his illness when all think he will die, recovery, campaigns in the Baltic and Crimea, self-imposed exile in Alexandrov, and the petition of Muscovites that he return, his enemies among the boyars threaten his success.

7 Responses to “Merida Events: Fiestas for the Virgin”

  1. Don’t forget Izamal’s annual fair, the Feria of the Virgin of Izamal – Dec 2 -10. This week there have already been dances, bullfights, and music. The Serenata happens on December 7th. This is when people from all over sing to the Virgin in the atrium of the convent. It goes well into the night with Mariachis usually at midnight! Meanwhile the Guadalupanos are riding through, completing their pilgrimage.

  2. Merida English Library — Game night

Please correct the address 51 x 66 as you know, does not exist.

  3. Done, thank you for catching that!

  4. Thank you Emily! I’m pretty sure we had the Izamal fiesta listed last week, but as you point out, its still going on. Thanks for the report… it sounds wonderful (unless you are trying to sleep, of course :-) )

  5. Emily – Thanks for bringing up an issue I never even considered. I list municipal festivals and fiestas on the week they begin. From now on, I’ll carry them over into the next week if they are still going on. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

  6. When are the main “events” of a fiesta usually going on?

Are these more evening type things or weekend type things?

We are thinking about going to Teabo or Izamal this weekend, but are unsure when is the best time to hang around.

  7. Our apologies for not replying to this sooner… we have been traveling and at times, out of internet reach. Fiestas generally get started around midday and go into the night. Because we don’t recommend driving long distances in the Yucatan at night (unless you are familiar with the territory), its probably best to get there around noonish and enjoy the afternoon festivities.
