Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan LivingThere are no new Municipal Festivals or Fiestas beginning this week. All activity is focused on next week’s Dia de los Muertos celebrations.

Yucatan Living It is only two weeks until the opening of the State Fair at X’Matquil, so do keep an eye out for a separate State Fair page from Yucatan Living next week.

Yucatan Living Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival: October 21 through December 13
Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival is one of the most important annual events in all of Mexico. This year’s festival is a tribute to the great composer and singer Sergio Esquivel, known throughout Mexico and born in Yucatan. The events are all online and can be viewed from the website of the Annual Festival of the Arts. Yucatan Living will be including events from this festival in our regular Events column so our readers won’t miss anything.

Yucatan Living Hanal Pixan 2011: UADY’s XII Contest of AltarsHanal Pixan or Day of the Death in Merida
This is a great contest with some pretty good prizes. First place wins $5,000 pesos, second place wins $3,000 pesos, and third place wins $2,000 pesos. All students enrolled in UADY can participate. The contest won’t take place until the 31st, but they can begin setting up on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM, so a little side trip to take a peek might be fun. By the way, this is also the day when you’ll see altars in the Plaza Grande, and the night for Corridor of the Souls that starts at La Ermita (Calle 66 at Calle 75).

Yucatan Living Concert: A Tribute to Jose Antonio Ceballos Rivas
This is a huge event and if you can get in, you should go. Performing tonight will be one of Yucatan’s most famous sons, Armando Manzanero, as well as Sergio Esquivel himself, the famous Los Juglares, Felipe de la Cruz, Angelica Balado, Fernando Leal and more! Wow… what a night!

This is going to be a wonderful event that is under the general direction of and produced by Maru Boeta. Included tonight will be Professor Luis Perez Sabido, Trio Vendabal, Mario III and CIA, the Orquesta Jaranera del Mayab, the Folkloric Ballet of the State of Yucatan. Guest performers will include Tony Espinosa, Dueto Bingo, Mozu “La voz,” Alfredo Bolio, and Carlos Gil.

Ópera Yucatan presents the Second Season of Operas at the Movies. This week, engaged in years of feuding, the families Lammermoor and Ravenswood have resigned to destroy each other. Prior to the start of the opera, Lord Enrico of Lammermoor has taken the upper hand, murdering Sir Edgardo’s father and claiming his lands. However, in time, Enrico falls into political disapproval, and resorts to saving his family’s future through the forced marriage of his sister Lucia to Lord Arturo Bucklaw.

Yucatan Living Saturday Eco Bazaar  Eco-Bazar in La 68 Casa de Cultura
This ongoing event will be selling local natural food, cosmetics and artistic products, in addition to the center’s gift shop, which sells a full range of clothing, artisan pieces and collector items by the newly formed La 68 Collective of Female Artisans. Books by Elena Poniatowska are available for purchase. This Saturday event will include a variety of additional activities, such as children’s literature classes, puppet shows, gardening with local plants and recycling techniques. The 68’s kitchen will be on hand to prepare Mexico City style quesadillas.

Yucatan Living Races: Primer Circuito Mérida-Chedraui 2011: Go Karts and Mountain Bikes: Next Race: October 22 (at night)
This event will be held monthly through the end of the year. Thirty Go Karts, fifteen of them from Merida and the rest from Campeche and Cancun compete in a 300-meter race. The bike race is a 5-lap elimination race that is open to the public.
Location: The back of the Macro-Plaza Mall parking lot, across from the Xtabay roundabout, on the way to Chichi Suarez.

Yucatan Living Galería Nahualli: Dinner November 19
An evening to delight the senses. A night of art, dinner and music chosen to please the most discerning guests. This year they have invited six artists from Cuba and of course, Galeria Nahualli, Casa de los Artistasthe hosts will be Abel Vázquez and Melva Medina, some of Merida’s finest artists. For your ears, Pawel Blaszkowski on the violin and Ruth Bennett on the harp, both members of the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan. Martin Älvarez Ibarrondo will perform his culinary magic in the kitchen. And they have added an extra touch. As part of the exhibit, the banquet tables will be set with service plates hand-painted by the artists, and these will be available for purchase after the meal.

Yucatan Living First Annual Merida Music Festival: November 20
All day music festival featuring 12 bands, including bands from Cuba, Ireland and the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan. Only 2000 tickets will be sold. The event will be catered by Hennessy’s, everyone’s favorite Irish pub.
Location: At Hacienda Dzibikak… if you have never been there, this will be a great opportunity to see one of Yucatan’s lovely renovated haciendas.

Yucatan Living The ANNY Art Show: Arte A Mano: December 3 & 4
This is the 7th edition of this show and, this year they have a lot of new artists, including some from Quintana Roo. They have contracted with an old and well-known Yucatecan restaurant to provide food service. More information soon! For those who do not know: AANY stands for Amigos de Artistas/Aartesanos Nuevos de Yucatan.

    Are there any harp lessons for children in the Merida area?

  2. Andrea, we would suggest going to the Music store (can’t remember the exact name at the moment… ) on Calle 21 in Itzimna. Go north on Paseo de Montejo and turn right just after the railroad tracks. It will be about three blocks down on your right. If anyone has a harp teacher, it will be them.
