Merida Events: Happy New Year!

This Week… starting December 30, 2013

Merida Fest Cultural Festival in Merida Yucatan Mexico

Yucatan Living 472nd Anniversary of the City of Merida Begins: January 5 through 31
January 5 marks the beginning of the month-long celebration of the founding of the City of Merida. It also includes the celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the Centro Cultural Olimpo. The festival begins at dawn on January 5, with the traditional singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Merida in the Plaza Grande. Participating this year will be performers and demonstrations of culture from 60 different cultural offices in Yucatan, as well as others from 13 different countries. Hundreds of performers will be on hand to entertain audiences throughout the month and all events are free of charge.

Rural Fiestas in Yucatan Mexico Yucatan Living Peto Fiesta: December 27 through January 02
This fiesta is in honor of Virgen de la Estrella . Peto is a rural municipality, so lots of leatherwork here, but there are also at least three fantastic jewelry shops in Peto and at least one of these families creates the marvelous high-end jewelry sold in the better shops in Merida. Any fiesta in Peto is a great excuse to find out just what wonders lie in the heart of Yucatan.

Yucatan Living Tizimin Fiesta: December 15 through January 10
This is a huge fiesta in the heart of Yucatan’s horse country. Visit the Tizimin website. We hardly know where to start telling you about this fiesta! It seems that it is not going to end! We are seeing events scheduled through January 18th! This fiesta is in honor of Santos Reyes (the Three Kings). Don’t think of this as just the end of a Cowboy Christmas. Tizimin is a huge municipality (county) whose activities extend from whaleshark watching on the northern coast to the traditional Mayan lifestyle in the south. While this is a cattleman’s wonderland, the shopping here is across the board: fine jewelry, pottery, leather work, pirograbado (wood carving by burning), artistic carpentry, and much much more!
