This Week… starting March 29, 2010
Municipal Fiestas This Week
Although there are no listed fiestas or festivals this week, look for special occasions in every village and neighborhood throughout the State. Easter is one of the most important weeks of the year in Yucatan and one of the most important vacation opportunities for Yucateco families.
Semana Santa (Holy Week) March 26 through April 4
Semana Santa begins on March 26 and runs through April 4 (Easter Sunday). Look for processions and masses throughout the week. This will also be a week in which many Yucatecos will visit the beach. Some will be spending the week at family beach houses, while others will be making day trips to and from Progreso. Traffic will be heavy, but this is an annual event that continues to grow. The goal is to provide everyone with a great Spring break and bring us all home safely. The SSP will be increased by 800, in order to ensure our safety. They will specifically be looking for impaired drivers, so please be careful on the highway between Merida and Progreso… and don’t forget to bring a designated driver!

Holy Thursday (Jueves Santo)
Although there are no events listed in the City of Merida for these days, this does not mean that there are no activities available in Yucatan. Quite the contrary. In each of the cities and towns in Yucatan, you will be able to see religious processions, including the Stations of the Cross, as well as the wonderful local parties that accompany them. At the beach, traffic will be beyond belief, but the non-stop fun will be well worth the trip. Please be careful on the highways, as this is one of the biggest weekends of the year in Yucatan.
Friday (Viernes) April 02, 2010
Holy Friday (Viernes Santo)
We’re pretty sure that Good Friday is the day that Acanceh (and some other towns) hold their Passion of the Cross performance. Acanceh is known for this, and it is quite a spectacle. If you’ve never seen it, we highly recommend it. The entire town (and more) come out to see the play, which takes place all around the town. If you want to see what it is like, watch our video of Acanceh and the Passion Play of Christ here.
