Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve: Saturday, March 9
When the rains failed in 1960, residents of Rancho Kiuic survived by supplementing dwindling corn reserves with the protein-rich core of the Bonete tree. When the rains returned they celebrated the age-old HETZ LUUM ceremony to give thanks and ask the gods to bless their land and families. The Bonete trees are still standing, and you are invited to visit Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve for a revival of the ancient HETZ LUUM ceremony. HETZ LUUM is a Maya agricultural ceremony that incorporates the indispensable tools of traditional devotion: a Hmen or shaman, altar, cardinal indicators, sacred offerings. Renowned Hmen and healer Don Felipe Manrique will officiate. Participants may assist with the ceremony and preparation of the traditional cornmeal Pib offering. Besides blessing the land and Hetz Luum participants, Don Felipe will offer a special prayer for the survival of the jaguar as we launch conservation fieldwork for this endangered animal in Yucatan´s Puuc Hills. This extraordinary all-day event includes transportation to-and-from Merida, and delicious breakfast and lunch prepared by local Reserve staff. Reserve Director James Callaghan will lead participants on walking tours to explore the complex and fascinating biology, history and archaeology of the Puuc. The private Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve´s 4,400 acres are home to a rich variety of plants and animals, including jaguar and ocelot. The Reserve also contains the beautiful ruins of the Maya community of Kiuic visited by Stephens and Catherwood in 1839, including the “House of Diamonds” featured in their classic “Incidents of Travel in Yucatan.”
