Merida Events: May Day

This Week… starting April 30, 2012

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Teabo Fiesta: April 28 through May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. The artisans here make typical clothing for both men and women. They also do embroidery by both hand and machine. If you are looking for a cotton hammock, you’ll find it in Teabo, along with excellent leatherwork. Teabo is located ust north of Tekax and to the east of Mani and Akil.

Yucatan Living Baca Fiesta: May 1 through May 3Santa Cruz Festivities in Yucatan
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Baca is just south and west of Motul and is home to 2 of the churches that have been restored as part of the state-wide restoration process. Don’t miss seeing either of them! And while you’re there, treat yourself to lunch at the Thai restaurant there.

Yucatan Living Conkal Fiesta: May 1 through May 8
This fiesta is also in honor of Santa Cruz. Conkal is a wonderful municipality with many talented artisans. Look here for machine embroidery, cotton hammocks, and carved wood boxes. Conkal is located on Merida’s northeastern border.

Yucatan Living Uayma Fiesta: May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz as well. Uayma is just to the west of both Temozon and Valladolid, and just south of Espita. We figure that places Uayma just about in the middle of most of the important Mayan events in history. There is a beautiful, 16th century convent and temple (Santo Domingo) in Uayma that was burned during the Caste War, and then renovated to its former glory. It is a wonder to behold. And, while we usually think of pottery as coming from directly south of Merida, the making of pottery is the most important work of the artisans in Uayma. Do try to stop in Uayma the next time you go to Valladolid or to Temozon. We know you’ll be glad you did. You can read more about Uayma and see some photos in our Yucatan Living article about Uayma.

Yucatan Living Sacalum Fiesta: May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Sacalum is right on the way to anywhere you want to go in southwestern Yucatan. It is just past Tecoh and Abala, and just this side of Ticul and Muna. Lots of agriculture, cattle and horses here, so look for great leatherwork. Visit Pueblos America for a google map to Sacalum.

Yucatan Living Tecoh Fiesta: May 3 through May 5
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Tecoh lies on the southeastern boundry of the Municipality of Merida. Look for talented artisans making woven hemp hammocks and carved wooden chests in Tecoh. …and the food in Tecoh is great! Before you decide that Tecoh may be too far off the grid for you, take a look at what you can expect to find out there.

Yucatan Living African Film: Soleil O
(Senegal, 1969) This is a French/Mauritanian drama shot over four years with a very low budget. This film tells the story of a black immigrant who makes his way to Paris in search of “his Gaul ancestors”. This manifesto denounces a new form of slavery: The immigrants desperately seek work, a place to live, but find themselves face to face with indifference, rejection, humiliation… Until the final call for uprising. Directed by Med Hondo. Sounds like a film you might have a hard time finding at Blockbuster…

Yucatan’s Paralympic team includes twelve athletes that will participate in weight-lifting, javelin and shot put. The athletes each need a special chair in order to compete and the children need a new vehicle to help them move from place to place. The paintings offered at auction will begin at $3,000 pesos and there will be a catalog of the paintings included with each invitation. There will also be a cocktail party for those who have invitations and catalogs on the evening of the auction. This is such a worthy cause and there is not much time left to meet this need before the June National Paralympic competition. Please attend this event and help in whatever way you can. Hard work deserves reward and these twelve athletes have earned their place in these games, as well as our support.
