Merida Events: Maybe, Maybe Not

This Week… starting April 27, 2009

A quick note to remind you about the Merida Month-At-A-Glance Calendar. The monthly calendar is color-coded and updated continually, so you can see what’s going on in a Merida minute (There’s a legend at the bottom… each color designates a category of event). See something you like? Click on the event to find a description and all the details you need to participate. You can print the details of a day, or print the month-at-a-glance. Or you can email it all to a friend (or to yourself!).

Notice: Events Cancelled at Request of the President
Sunday, April 27, 2009, the Governor of Yucatan announced that all events expecting large crowds (300 or more) will be cancelled until further notice at the request of the President and the National Council of Health. Given that decree, we wouldn’t be surprised if many more events are cancelled this week, until further information is known about the flu virus. As of now, Yucatan has not had any cases of swine flu and everyone would like to keep it that way. That having been said, residents of Yucatan are also encouraged not to lock themselves up and avoid contact with others completely. It is perfectly safe to go about one’s daily life, but it would be foolish to take on the risks associated with large crowds. As always, remember that the best way to avoid the flu is to eat well, sleep well and wash your hands thoroughly and often. If you are going to sneeze or cough, do so into the crook of your elbow, to protect those around you. Refrain, just for now, from shaking heads and kissing people hello. Trying to weather an illness on your own or self-medicating with over the counter medicines can only make matters worse and put friends and loved ones at risk. Instead, we are asked to please see a physician at the first sign of any kind of illness, for our own sake and for the sake of others.

Fiestas this Week

Yucatan Living Teabo Fiesta 6 Day Event
April 28 through May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. The artisans here make typical clothing for both men and women. They also do embroidery by both hand and machine. If you are looking for a cotton hammock, you’ll find it in Teabo, along with excellent leatherwork. Teabo is located just north of Tekax and to the east of Mani and Akil.

Yucatan Living Conkal Fiesta 9 Day Event
May 1 through May 8
Conkal, Yucatan Mexico
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Conkal is a wonderful municipality with many talented artisans. Look here for machine embroidry, cotton hammocks, and carved wood boxes. There are also wonderful churches and monuments in Conkal, so it is a "must do" trip. Conkal is located nearby, right on Merida’s northeastern border.

Yucatan Living Baca Fiesta 3 Day Event
May 1 through May 3
This fiesta is in honor of Santa Cruz. Baca is just south and west of Motul and is home to 2 of the churches that have been restored as part of the state-wide restoration process. Don’t miss seeing either of them!

Yucatan Living Children’s Day

Yucatan Living Classical Thursday: Recital of Zarzuela
This is a performance by Hugo Pinto, Miguel Mena, and Alberto Alvarez. That alone makes it a "Must See" event. However, this is a type of performance with which we all need to become more familiar. Zaruela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes. With this kind of a cast, we can only expect a wonderful evening and an introduction to a new (to us) form of musical presentation.

Yucatan Living May 1 & 2
Izamal’s First Music and Culture "Festival of the South"
The highlight of the first day will be an inaugural concert at 7:00 PM. Bands from around the state will be playing throughout the fiesta but, on Saturday, hip-hop singer Ray Alonso will not only sing, but will give a motivational speech to the young people. There will be presentations of urban art, including graffiti, as well as demonstrations of robotics and skating.  There will also be skating and graffiti contests. They may like hip hop music, but this is the generation that cares about the planet and the watchword of the day is cleaning up the environment, including recycling the trash that is generated by this fiesta. As if that isn’t enough, there will be a debate on evolution vs. creationism. Needless to say, tons upon tons of pizza will be consumed. This is a chance to take a look at the generation that will come after us and, we think, they are off to a great start!
Location: Complejo Deportivo (Sports Complex), Izamal
Time: Friday, May 1: 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM; Saturday, May 2: 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
