Municipal Fiestas This Week
Halacho Fiesta
This fiesta takes place during the third week in November and is a traditional festival (county fair). Halacho is located on our border with Campeche. The Templo de Santiago Apóstol and the ruins of Siho Oxkintok can both be found there.
Xmatkuil – The Yucatan State Fair: November 11- December 03
Every year, the Yucatan State Fair is held in the small municipality of Xmatkuil, just outside of Merida. If you’ve never been, go! You’ll enjoy the parts that are different from what you are used to as well as the parts that are just like your State Fair back home.

Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival: October 21 through December 13
Yucatan’s Fall Cultural Festival is one of the most important annual events in all of Mexico. This year’s festival is a tribute to the great composer and singer Sergio Esquivel, known throughout Mexico and born in Yucatan. The events are all online and can be viewed from the website of the Annual Festival of the Arts. Yucatan Living will be including events from this festival in our regular Events column so our readers won’t miss anything.

Exposition: The Brushes of Garcia Gineres

Semillas Tzucacab: Participatory Photography for Social Change
Talk: Nov. 19, Photography Show: Nov. 14 – 26
From the Yucatan Living article, Semillas Tzucacab, “this project uses a technique called Photovoice, a participatory action research methodology in which people with a unique and underrepresented point of view in life use photography to express their particular lived experience… The result is a showcase of photography accompanied by short captions that together provide a glimpse into lives that otherwise remain invisible to most people.” Now, the photos are coming to the Merida English Language Library, where they will be on display for about two weeks. Come to the talk that Chelsea will be giving, and enjoy the photos. The photos on display for 2 weeks beginning Nov. 14, plus a talk on Nov. 19.

The Splendor and Decline of One Culture

Galería Nahualli: Dinner 
A night of art, dinner and music chosen to please the most discerning guests. This year they have invited six artists from Cuba and of course, the hosts will be Abel Vázquez and Melva Medina, some of Merida’s finest artists. For your ears, Pawel Blaszkowski on the violin and Ruth Bennett on the harp, both members of the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan. Martin Älvarez Ibarrondo will perform his culinary magic in the kitchen. And they have added an extra touch. As part of the exhibit, the banquet tables will be set with service plates hand-painted by the artists, and these will be available for purchase after the meal.

(Finland 1922). Starring Walter Janssen. As a young couple stops and rests in a small village inn, the man is abducted by Death and is sequestered behind a huge doorless, windowless wall. The woman finds a mystic entrance and is met by Death, who tells her three separate stories set in exotic locales, all involving circumstances similar to hers. In each story, a woman, trying to save her lover from his ultimate tragic fate, fails. The young lady realizes the meaning of the tales and takes the only step she can to reunite herself with her lover.

First Annual Merida Music Festival
All day music festival featuring 12 bands, including bands from Cuba, Ireland and the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan. Only 2000 tickets will be sold. The event will be catered by Hennessy’s, everyone’s favorite Irish pub, the Beer House and other local restaurants.
Location: At Hacienda Dzibikak… if you have never been there, this will be a great opportunity to see one of Yucatan’s lovely renovated haciendas. Check their website here for location and directions.

Russian Ballet in Merida: Monday. November 21, 2011
It wouldn’t be Christmas in Merida without one of the marvelous Russian Ballet companies passing our way – once and sometimes even twice. This year, the Ballet Ruso de Rostov presents Chopiniana, a two act ballet with up to 30 dancers on stage in every scene. Hurry to get your tickets early for this one night show. Great Chili Cookoff in Chelem: November 26
Come one, come all for the Great Chili Cookoff and show us if you have the best chili in the the Yucatan. This is a fundraising event for the Chelem Christmas Childrens Fund. There will be prizes for the best chili in categories of Regular Chili, Vegetarian Chili, and Non-Traditional Chili. Music and karaoke will be sponsored by Oldies With Jim. This successful event has raised money each year to make our local children have a special Christmas and now they look forward to it with anticipation. From what we hear, this will be the coolest Funky Market ever! Vendors, artists and artisans from miles around will display their wares. They close off the entire street, Coca Cola provides the tents and TACOMAYA provides the food.
