Merida Events: Motul Fiesta!

This Week… starting July 5, 2010

Municipal Fiestas This Week

There is only one municipal fiesta beginning this week, but what a fiesta it is! Look for non-stop entertainment in Motul for 16 straight days and nights!

Yucatan Living Free Expo Fair in Motul 16 Day Event - July 9 through 25
This is a fiesta in honor of la Purisima Concepción. If you have not been to Motul, now is the time to go. We suspect that the northeast quadrant of the Municipality of Merida will continue to grow in the direction of Motul and that expats should certainly become familiar with the area. The City of Motul is the birthplace of Yucatan’s most beloved Governor, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and there is a museum, as well as a monument, there to celebrate his life and mourn his death. This years schedule of events in Motul include:

  • Friday 9: Crowning of Queen Minelsi Salas Moo, with a traditional Vaqueria accompanied by the Orchestra Sonora Yucatan
  • Saturday 10: Opening of the Fair which will be shown on the television show Onda Baax Time: 8:00 PM, Featured Performance by Flash Gordon
  • Sunday 11: Noon: Caravan Superior Chikito Cecilio and his Group, Sun Girls and a comedian. Mexican Night, which will include a ballet, mariachi band and singers. Featured performances by The Radio, and Cecilio and Chikito

  • Tuesday 13: Concert: Alex Moguel, a romantic evening with Love, Love.
  • Wednesday 14: Comedy: Madelin Liama: Candita and Paula Quintana: La Chuli

  • Saturday 24: An evening with comedian Cuxum Oxxo, Globito y Bizcochito, the Cubana Alina La Loba and Chicas Caribenas; War of the Bands between Abusadora, Oro Verde, Usurpadora, and Respuesta de Durango
  • Sunday 25: Closing of the Fair with Noah el Makech Cabrera, Dance music by Clamor y Clamor, and Los Mendez.

In the City of Merida

As you will soon notice, events in the city are winding down. Within just a short period of time, all nonessential government buildings will close for a month of summer vacation. However, dont think this means that no one is working. In fact, quite the opposite is true. All of the buildings will be getting an annual cleaning and facelift. By the end of August, everything will be open again and we will be headed for the Fall Cultural Festival and nonstop events until mid-December. That is not to say, however, that there are no events and happenings in the city on several days this week. There are still plenty of performances and events listed on our Ongoing Events and Classes page, and there are quite a number of things listed in our Coming Soon section at the bottom of this page. These are events and classes with multiple dates that extend into the next few weeks. So read on and enjoy your week in Yucatan! And of course, if there’s nothing to do, make some margaritas and hang out by the pool!

Yucatan Living Bucketful of Puppies

Bored? The good people at Evolución took delivery of, yes, a bucketful of newborn puppies. They need some foster parents to feed them until they are old enough to get homes of their own. Here’s the story:Puppies Need a Home

Today we literally received a "bucket of puppies" at the shelter (see attached photos).  They were born within hours of coming to the shelter – they all still have their umbilical cords.  The local police brought them to us and they did not know the status of the mother.

There are 7 of them and I currently have them at my house for home care, but it would be great if someone would be willing to help out.  They are cute as can be, but I promise if you take this on, you will get no sleep.  They need round the clock care for the first week – with feedings every 3 hours.  If you are interested in taking on a couple of these guys, or, even better, if you know of a female that has recently had pups and may nurse these little guys, please let me know.

Thanks so much!!!

Jill
