Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living There are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning during the month of March. Yucatecos, throughout the state, are preparing for Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the biggest religious and cultural events of the year.

Yucatan Living Semana Santa  March 30 – April 8

Yucatan Living Expo: 012 Guelaguetza Oaxaca in Merida
Oaxacan music, dance, color and culture come to Merida! There will be 250 dancers, promoters and artisans on hand, as well as 40 stalls. Do come out and learn all about the culture and traditions of Oaxaca!

Yucatan Living Festival of Trova: Trio Trova Nova

This performance is under the direction of David Solis. Trio Trova Nova is one of Merida’s favorite trova groups and always sure to please.

The Way Home

Yucatan Living Movie: The Way Home
(South Korea 2002). Director: Jeong-Hyang-Lee, Starring: Seung-ho Yu, Eul-Boom Kim and Hyo-Hee Dong. When his mother has economic difficulties, Sang-Woo, age seven, goes to live with his elderly grandmother in a hut on the outskirts of a remote village. Soon, Sang-Woo’s urban customs come into conflict with the simplicity of her grandmother and the modest rural area in which she lives.

Yucatan Living Concert: The Choir of the City of Merida
This choir is under the direction of Maestra Nidia Gongora. The title of the performance is Abba Acapella, so look for Maestra Nidia Gongora to play this wonderful choir as if it is a fine instrument.

Yucatan Living XVII Body Building and Fitness Cup
Cash prizes will total $20,000 pesos and at least 100 athletes are expected from as far away as Tabasco, Chiapas and throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

Sponsored by Hennessy’s Irish Pub and other local companies, the fourth annual Hennessy Cup Polo Tournament will be held today and tomorrow at the polo fields. The schedule is Saturday, from 2:30 – 6:00 Polo elimination games and also, from 2:30 – 6:00 Horse jumping. On Sunday, from 2:30 – 6:00 the Polo finals, and at 6:00 PM, the Polo Trophy Ceremony. Yucatan Living International Women Club: Time Traveler’s Costume Ball: Sunday March 25

Yucatan Living IV Hennessy Cup Polo Tournament: March 24 and 25Polo Tournament in Yucatan
This tournament will also mark the inauguration of the professional size grass polo field (300 meters by 15o meters). The six competing teams come from Merida, Mexico City and Cancun. Simultaneously, there will be a horse jumping competition taking place in the sand arena. Food and beverages will be offered by Hennessy Irish Pub, the Bierhaus, Chef Marin with seafood and Chef Chris with Thai food. Also on hand will be wine tasting by Tanino, a full bar, and ice cream from Domo Blanco. All interested are invited.

Yucatan Living 2012 Whale Shark Festival: June 15 – 17, 2012
Swim with Whale Sharks and help support environmental education at the same time. Ceviche Tours is donating its entire Whale Shark Festival profit to Amigos del Isla Contoy, a 501c3 non-profit that then provides support for the education of the local population on sustainable marine conservation and ecotourism. There can sometimes be as many as 200 whale sharks feeding near Isla Mujeres, so don’t miss your chance to see them.

  1. The XVII Body Building and Fitness Cup (for today, March 22nd) is not at the Teatro Carlos Acereto, however they were rehearsing a preschool play. It may have been The Three Little Pigs, which was entertaining for a few minutes too, but definitely the Fitness Cup was not at this location.

  2. Our humblest apologies, Joe! I’m sure the Three Little Pigs were wondering what you were doing there :) We do our best to get these things right, of course, but we don’t always.
