This important event is designed to raise awareness of the role of producers in the community, as well as awareness of the risk that the famous Ixil onions could soon disappear. This four day event is the product of a group of students in the second and fourth semesters of the Bachelor of Gastronomy, at the Southeast Gastronomity College. These students formed Cofradía de los Fogones as an organized means of carrying out the requirements for research methodology related to their university degrees. They are certainly to be commended and we do recommend attending this event.

Yucatan Living Yucateco Teachers and Maya Language Revitalization
The title of this program is “If not us, then who?” This is a presentation by Anne Marie Guerrettaz. Language is a complex facet of identity, culture, and education in any society. The 2003 Ley General de Derechos Lingüísticos guarantees various rights for Mexico’s diverse indigenous groups, including bilingual education for all of Mexico’s indigenous peoples.
Paradoxically, many teachers in Maya/Spanish bilingual schools (escuelas indígenas) of the Yucatan have often not been speakers of Maya, which has been a major obstacle in insuring quality bilingual education in Maya-speaking communities. One result of the 2003 law has been the creation of government-mandated Maya language courses for teachers in escuelas indígenas across the peninsula. These Maya language courses for teachers are the focus of Anne Marie’s dissertation research and presentation.
