Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living There are no new municipal festivals or fiestas beginning during the month of March. Yucatecos, throughout the state, are preparing for Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the biggest religious and cultural events of the year.

Yucatan Living Semana Santa  March 30 – April 8

Yucatan Living 25th Edition of the Shoemakers’ Fair in Ticul
March 22 – April 1

Spring and Summer shoes will be featured in this fair. There will be a total of 70 exhibitors (55 shoe manufacturers, 10 clothing manufacturers and the rest will be a variety of artisans, including potters. Look for most of the shoe manufacturers to be in their stores due to the difficulty of moving merchandise in and out over the course of the fair.
Location: On the Esplanade in Centro, Ticul; with Entertainment in the Concha Acustica.
Time: Opening Night Events begin at 8:00 PM
Admission: Free

Trio Vendaval is one of Yucatan’s trova trio favorites. They are under the direction of Elias Reyes.

Yucatan Living Music: Meridana / The Soul of the Yucateca Trova
No further information is given about this event. When that happens, it usually means that this will be a performance by a number of Yucateco stars.

Wednesday (Miercoles) March 28, 2012

Yucatan Living Remembering the Composers
Tonight’s tribute is to José Esquivel Pren, Ricardo Duarte Esquivel and Víctor Esquivel Ancona. There will be several celebrity voices on hand to perform this tribute.

Yucatan Living Concert: Mayab Jazz
There is an awful lot of fine jazz coming out of Yucatan these days. The art is evolving and fine tuning itself, as are the artists. These are always great performances.

Yucatan Living Callejoneada
For those who are not familiar with this term, a callejoneada is a walking serenade. This one will wind its way through the center of the city, probably between the Plaza Grande and the major parks in Centro.

Yucatan Living Concert: Watermark Yucatan
This performance is by Dueto Sonido Abierto (Rudy Vallado and Verónica Cabrera). These are two of the finest romantic voices in Yucatan. Look for lovely ballads in this performance!

Yucatan Living Classical Music: Echoes of the Mayab
This performance is by Cuarteto Fusión. The music is all classical and all written by composers from Yucatan.

Yucatan Living Opening: Galleria 904
This is a visual arts exhibition that includes paintings, photography, videos and installations the Santa Ana museum across from the church. Zanto Males is the coordinator.

The title of this performance is His Majesty the Bambuco. Any time you have a chance to hear the sweet voice of Jorge Buenfil, try not to miss it. Just because he tends toward ballads these days doesn’t mean he won’t break into the beat of the 70s and then the fun is on!

Yucatan Living Opening of Various Shows
Abstraction, Sensation – A Separate Reality – Blooming Times. This is a showing of the paintings of Manuel Gonzalez Diaz. Also we have heard that there will be sculpture installations in the lobby of the theatre, some of which will be by the painter, Lobo. The previews we’ve seen are great… check it out! And remember, unlike in many places around the world, most art displayed in Merida is for sale, and very reasonably priced.

Yucatan Living 1st Annual Akumal Comedy Festival: April 19 – 21, 2012
This comedy festival is brought to us by Stand Up! Records. This completely free comedy festival will feature over a dozen professional comedians from the United States performing seven shows in four distinct venues in Akumal over three days. One of the comedians will be Merida’s own Mel Fleming (of Mel and Blossom). This Akumal Comedy Festival 2012festival will be fundraising to build a playground for the local children of the Akumal Pueblo. As part of the festival, local Akumal children will perform a specially choreographed dance routine at 5 of the 7 shows.
Location: Akumal is located on the Caribbean Coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is a small town, so the activity of this fundraiser will be evident.

Yucatan Living 2012 Whale Shark Festival: June 15 – 17, 2012
Swim with Whale Sharks and help support environmental education at the same time. Ceviche Tours is donating its entire Whale Shark Festival profit to Amigos del Isla Contoy, a 501c3 non-profit that then provides support for the education of the local population on sustainable marine conservation and ecotourism. There can sometimes be as many as 200 whale sharks feeding near Isla Mujeres, so don’t miss your chance to see them.
