This Week… starting May 24, 2010
Municipal Fiestas This Week
Tekom Fiesta 9 Day Event – May 20 through 28
This event is called Fiesta de las Hamacas. Tekom is located way over in the southeastern part of our state, just south of Valladolid and north of Chikindzonot. If anyone is looking for authentic, this is the place to find it. Artisans in Tekom produce articles carved from wood, typical clothing, embroidered tablecloths, and traditional woven hammocks (hence the name of the fiesta). Since Tekom is off the beaten path, we suspect this is just the sort of place our readers will love.
Kinchil Fiesta 1 Day Event – May 24
This fiesta is in honor of Cristo de las Ampollas. Kinchil is located between Samahil and Celestun, just 34 km southeast of Merida, so it is near enough to the city to go and see this event. Look for woven baskets of palm, rattan and bamboo here.
Founding of Valladolid Fiesta 1 Day Event – May 28
This day is growing in importance as residents and visitors celebrate the founding of Valladolid. Although Valladolid is the cowboy capital of Yucatan, it is also a growing center for manufacturing and exports, as well as being home to many artisans, so look for anything from a fancy saddle to high end jewelry in Valladolid.
