Merida Events: Summer Handcraft Fairs

This Week… starting July 27, 2009

If you’re wondering where everybody went, they are all at the Dzitya Municipal Handicraft Fair. It is an amazing festival this year! But don’t overlook the fair at San Crisanto. We are amazed to see all they have to offer this year. These tiny little villages in Yucatan certainly do know how to throw a party!

Yucatan Living Dzitya Municipal Handicraft FairDzitya Municipal Fair
This is one of the biggest events in the entire year and is an absolute "must attend" for anyone who is decorating, building, or remodeling a home – as well as for anyone who wants to get that Christmas list out of the way with "fine" gifts for everybody on the list. This year, there will be 150 of the best craftsmen in all of Yucatan in attendance. Their work will be in a variety of media, colors, and designs. This year, too, there will be special guest craftsmen from the State of Michoacan. They will be bringing textiles, copperwork, hats, guitars, and more. In addition, they will be bringing their traditional dancers and the Inchapiru Orchestra. Again – this is a must attend event. Visit our article on The Stones of Dzitya to learn more about the wonderful things you can find in this small village on the north side of Merida.

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Only 2 municipal fiestas begin this week. When that happens, we know what’s coming next – an avalanche of fiestas! Enjoy this one “light” week because a total of TEN municipal fiestas begin next week!

Yucatan Living Teabo Fiesta  6 Day Event:
July 27 through August 1
This fiesta is in honor of San Pedro and San Pablo. Teabo is just north of Tekax and just east of Mani and Akil. You can find great leatherwork here, as well as cotton hammocks and embroidery done by hand. It is a whole lot cooler in the southern part of Yucatan this time of year than it is in Merida, so a little trip south might be a pretty good idea right about now.

Yucatan Living Fiestas in Santiago:
Two Week Event   July 21 to August 7
Gremios in Merida
For our readers who live in Santiago, the celebration of Santo Cristo de la Transfiguración begins on Tuesday, July 21, at 10:00 AM. Processions that include the Black Christ will begin on Sunday, July 26 and continue, with processions by 13 different unions, until Friday, August 7. In most cases, the processions are at 10:00 AM and the masses are at 11:00 AM.

Yucatan Living August 1 through August 9
This is, two separate neighborhood fiestas. One is in San Sebastian, and the second is in Xmatkuil (not to be confused with the State Fair held there in the Fall). At these fiestas, you can expect dances, gremios, a small ride section in the parks, vendors of traditional snacks, corridas, and church services. And to the dismay of the dogs at the Yucatan Living/Eclectec office, a few too many voladores (flying firecrackers).

Yucatan Living Concert: Mexico – SpainConcert Mexico-Spain
This performance features Alberto Alvarez, Miguel Mena, and Hugo Pinto. Needless to say, it is the “must see” performance of the week! It sometimes feels as if Alberto Alvarez is operating some kind of secret factory somewhere deep inside of UADY. This internationally recognized Cuban pianist, year after year, just keeps on turning out musicians and voices as if it was just another day at the office. We are in awe and these are certainly always “must see performances. This time, it is the maestro and two tenors – don’t miss it!
