Merida Events: The Dead of Summer

This Week… starting July 26, 2010

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Valladolid Fiesta  One Day Event:July 26
This is a one day fiesta in honor of Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana. Valladolid is located in the eastern part of the State of Yucatan and is one of the signature municipalities in the identity of the state itself. Valladolid is the land of horse ranching, restored cathedrals, cenotes, archaeological ruins, and one of the most active business and trade areas in all of Mexico. Valladolid is a must see for all of the expats who know to look off of the tourist trails for surprises that make memories forever. Never miss an opportunity to visit Valladolid, even for a one day fiesta.

Yucatan Living Teabo Fiesta  6 Day Event:July 27 through August 1
This fiesta is in honor of San Pedro and San Pablo. Teabo is just north of Tekax and just east of Mani and Akil. You can find great leatherwork here, as well as cotton hammocks and embroidery done by hand. It is a whole lot cooler in the southern part of Yucatan this time of year than it is in Merida, so a little trip south might be a pretty good idea right about now.

In the City of Merida

Yucatan LivingMerida Fiesta:10 Day EventGremios in Merida: August 1 through August 15
This is, in reality, two separate neighborhood fiestas. One is in Santiago and the other is in San Sebastian. Loads of activities going on in the plazas and parks, we can tell you that this fiesta is just like the ones we’ve seen in the pueblos, only bigger and louder. And with more firecrackers (voladores) and fireworks!

Note: Even Cairo Cinema Café will take a break for a week or so. They will have only 2 movies this week and then a well deserved break.

In case there is anyone who doesnt believe that a voice is the equivalent of a musical instrument or that a choir is the equivalent of an orchestra, we invite you to listen to samples of their work on their MySpace page. We especially liked A una dama que iba cubierta and La Cochinita Pibil. Performance dates near Merida include:
